About Catherine

Driven by a genuine passion for learning, I have honed key study methods that, when combined with hard work, lead to academic success. Following my summa cum laude Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature and History of Art from Saint Louis University, I earned my Master of Science degree with Distinction from The University of Edinburgh (currently ranked #24 overall in the world, according to Times Higher Education). I have published academic articles in such journals as UCLA's "Comitatus" and have been accepted to present my research at conferences including the Australian and New Zealand 11th Biennial Conference of the Australian & New Zealand Association for Medieval and Early Modern Studies. I am now thrilled by the opportunity to work with other students!

I specialize in two primary disciplines, the first of which includes English-related subjects. My pedagogic strengths encompass grammar, literature, proofreading, cover letter and resume editing, standardized test preparation, and ESL writing/reading comprehension. While attaining my bachelor's degree, I served as a compensated Writing Consultant in Saint Louis University's English Language Center (ELC), which specializes in assisting adult students who spoke English as a Second Language (ESL). Following graduation, I have recently volunteered as a Citizenship Tutor for Bilingual International Assistant Services (BIAS). In this position, I tutored immigrants and refugees in English speaking, reading, and writing.

My second area of specialization is European History and General Humanities, such as Philosophy, Aesthetic Theory, and Art History. With a master's degree in the latter, I maintain working knowledge of these fields' approaches, terminology, and research trends.

Whatever subject we work on, I develop a prolonged, professional relationship with my students. This entails setting challenging yet attainable goals based on his/her individual abilities, needs, and expressed interests. Once long-term and subsequent short-term goals have been established, the student and I will work toward them TOGETHER. I typically review homework I have assigned with the student, and chart progress with him/her in our session so that he/she feels more involved in his/her personal learning process. As Benjamin Franklin said, “Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.” Ultimately, I aspire to teach my students learning methods and study habits that will help them be successful beyond our sessions, into their future academic endeavors.

In regards to my performance, I encourage honesty in student feedback. I hold myself to high standards, and believe that my students come first. Therefore, I will not charge a student for a session with which he/she is not completely satisfied. To ensure that students have a quiet space conducive to tutoring sessions, I am willing to travel to libraries or other public locations for our sessions. I am also flexible with my scheduling. I request 5-hour advance notice of cancellation without repercussion, and offer make-up sessions.

Please feel free to contact me with questions or to set up appointments. I am looking forward to helping you succeed in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have attended Roman Catholic schools (which require Bible and Christian Religion classes each year) since Kindergarten: St. Paul Elementary School (Westerville, OH) and St. Francis DeSales High School (Columbus, OH). I then attended a Jesuit university, Saint Louis University (St. Louis, MO). There, as a Bachelor of Arts student, I was required to take as core courses a minimum of 3 Theology courses and 3 Philosophy courses (one of which was The Philosophy of Religion). Therefore, I am more than well-acquainted with the literary structure of the Bible, Gospel authorship, parallels between Old and New Testaments, variations of literal and metaphorical interpretations of the text, theological differences between Catholic and Protestant faiths, and the history of various heretical traditions stemming from different readings of the Bible at different points in history.

English

I attained my English degree summa cum laude from Saint Louis University. As an undergraduate student, I worked in University Writing Services, which caters to the English reading and writing needs of students across all majors and abilities.

ESL/ESOL

During my senior year, I served as a compensated Writing Consultant in the English Language Center (ELC). This center specializes in teaching and tutoring English as a second language to undergraduate and graduate students with the aim of ameliorating course work and TOEFL scores. Following my graduation, I volunteered at the nonprofit Bilingual International Assistant Services in Saint Louis as a Citizenship Tutor. In this capacity, I used outcomes-driven techniques to teach American Civics and English to home bound speakers of other languages (predominantly immigrants or refugees) with the aim of helping them pass their United States Citizenship test / naturalization examination.

Proofreading

In addition to my summa cum laude degree in English Language & Literature, I served as an Editor and Grant Writer for a nonprofit. This honed my proofreading proficiency and eye for textual detail. Furthermore, I attained my MSc in the United Kingdom, making me adept at both U.S. and U.K. spelling, grammar, and punctuation conventions. I am comfortable with a myriad of formatting and citation styles, including APA, MLA, and Chicago.
