American University (Int'l Relations)
Hello! I am an English as a Second Language tutor based in Saint Louis, MO. I live and work mostly on the south side. I have over a decade of experience teaching language in the United States and South Korea. I have studied several languages, and I speak basic Spanish and French.
I love teaching ESL because I like learning about other cultures. I know what it feels like to be a foreigner and to struggle with a second language, so I like helping people transition to their life in St Louis. I teach basic conversation, advanced grammar (yes, that includes prepositions!), and accent modification. I speak very clearly, with a neutral North American accent. I can successfully teach English to accomplish specific goals, such as citizenship tests, driving tests, TOEFL, etc. I have experience teaching children, but I absolutely love working with adults who are highly self-motivated.
I have a Bachelor of Arts from American University in Washington, DC where I studied International Relations. The university is where I started my ESL tutoring career. I began by teaching English for Citizenship to a relative of a professor. Since then I have tutored and taught large classrooms in various locations, including Washington, DC, Olympia, Washington, New Orleans, LA, Seoul, South Korea, and here in St Louis, MO where there is a huge immigrant population.
My teaching style is that of total immersion, where we try to only speak English and translate only if it is absolutely necessary. I try to plan lessons that build off of lessons learned and address the students' common mistakes in grammar and syntax. I try to make the lessons fun and interesting, and I prefer not to use textbooks, as I have a more organic approach to teaching. I will come to your house in St Louis city, or we can meet at the library or a coffee shop.
Please feel free to contact me to set up a consultation or to ask any questions that my profile does not address. I'm looking forward to hearing from you! Hello! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
