About Jenni

I currently teach 8th grade English at a Parkway School District. This is my sixth year teaching. I graduated from Mizzou with my Masters in Education. Go Tigers! I currently teach 8th grade English, however, I have had experience working with students of all ages.

The thing I love most about teaching and tutoring is getting to know the students! Tutoring is a great method because I can give students one-on-one attention and can help them make huge gains in their learning. To do this, I use a wide range of resources and a variety of teaching methods, including cooperative learning, inquiry, problem-based learning and more. I make the material approachable and relevant to students who may not like the content area or who struggle with the subject. I differentiate my instruction so that all students have the support they need to be successful.

I can't wait to work with you to help you reach you academic goals! Contact me to schedule a session! I am available most weekdays after 4. I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

I am an English teacher at a school district, and this is my fifth year teaching. I teach test prep and reading and writing skills in my curriculum. I have also had experience tutoring a student specifically for the ACT as well.

American History

I have experience teaching in an American History classroom. I have helped students to understand the patterns in historical events in America. I teach students to analyze the cause and long term effects of events in our country. Students learn to ask questions and acquire meaning for primary documents and to apply their learning to the current events of today's America.

Common Core

I teach using the Common Core standards for 8th grade English. This includes strands on reading literature, reading informational text, writing, language and speaking and listening. I am very familiar with the standards for other grade levels as I was part of the curriculum writing team that focused on vertical alignment and articulation of different grade levels.

English

I am an English teacher at parkway school district. I have been teaching for five years. I have many resources and strategies to help people succeed. Please contact me!

ESL/ESOL

I am qualified to teach this subject because I have worked with many students who speak English as a second language. I employ a variety of methods to reach these students. I use visuals to help them understand the concepts, and I coach them in their speaking and listening skills.

Grammar

I am qualified to teach grammar for many reasons. First of all, I teach grammar daily in my classroom. I teach grammar in context by using texts we are studying to analyze sentence structure and punctuation. I know that grammar requires lots of practice in order to practice, and I provide my students with the knowledge needed to master these skills in their writing.

Literature

I am qualified to teach literature because I teach it everyday in my classroom. I work with students to check for comprehension. Then I dig deeper with them to analyze the theme of the story. We also work to examine the author's craft and the literary element used in the text.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have mastery of using Microsoft PowerPoint and the skills to teach it.

Microsoft Word

I use Microsoft Word daily. I know how to use all of the tools on the program. I regularly help students to use And understand how Microsoft Word operates.

Praxis

I passed the Praxis with a high score. I have also worked with two college students who were preparing for the Praxis and both students passed. I am familiar with the content knowledge and pedological theories assessed on the Praxis.

Proofreading

I teach proof-reading skills to my students daily. Each day, we start class with a sentence that needs to be edited and fixed. I go over comma rules, ellipsis, using colons and more. The more students practice editing incorrect sentences, the more they are able to correctly punctuate their own writing.

Reading

I majored in English at Mizzou, and I am a certified reading and writing teacher. I have been teaching for 5 years and have many resources and strategies to help students succeed in reaching their academic goals.

Social Studies

Although I am not currently teaching in a Social Studies classroom, I am certified to do so. I have experience during my student teaching working in American/World History. When I taught Social Students, I helped students look at the big picture and notice historical trends and patterns. I had students work with primary documents and DBQs (document based questions) to get them to a deeper understanding of the content.

Study Skills

I am qualified to tutor in the area of study skills because this is something I teach as part of my curriculum and work as an 8th grade teacher. I work with students on different ways to study and learning the material including, flashcards, Cornell notes, Quizlet, idea webbing, mind maps, and more. I also work with students on test taking skills. I have personally helped prepare many students for upcoming test and have taught them the skills they need to prepare on their own.

Vocabulary

In order to teach vocabulary, I teach word parts. I teach students prefixes, bases, and suffixes. When students learn how to break down words and analyze word parts, they are able to get meaning from words that they have never seen before. In addition, I teach students to use context clues in order to figure out unknown words. My students also have weekly words that are commonly used to learn, memorize, and apply.

Writing

I teach students how to write as part of my curriculum. I teach writing narratives, informational, and argumentative pieces. I take students through the writing process of pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing. I use the Writer's Workshop model of mini-lessons including modeling, guided practice, and independent practice. I also confer with students to coach them to become better writers. I look at mentor texts with my students and they work to mimic the style or craft of the author.
