About Carla

My career has been devoted to helping people achieve success and gain confidence in their skills and abilities, whether the student is 6 or 60. I student taught in middle school, spent the first part of my career as a reading specialist in elementary schools, and later taught adults English as a second language, and GED/Adult Basic Education. Most recently I trained adults on job-seeking skills including interviewing.
I believe that students can benefit from coaching, much like Olympic athletes. Having a tutor gives a student the time and privacy needed to ask that question and the tutor time to wait for the response. I individualize the program based on observation of the student, and am willing to work with parents and get input from the school to support the student. I tutored through an agency for several years, and for many years privately by referral through University of Missouri-St. Louis where I earned my master's degree. I would appreciate 24 hours to cancel, but as a parent I understand that may not be possible, so please give at least 6 hours notice. We can arrange to reschedule if possible.

I hold life certification in Missouri as a reading specialist, and have taught reading for grades one through introductory college reading. I have taught new readers through adults who never learned to read. I believe in teaching using varied techniques and finding materials that engage the individual student. I taught English as a Second Language to adults, basic level for about five years, and held state certification in that field at the time. Introducing our language and culture to new arrivals or people who never had a chance to learn was a pleasure.

My college minor was French and I hold certification in Missouri to teach French. At the University of Illinois I lived in a special house where we spoke French all the time, so I learned the language to a deep level. I still speak good French according to clients who have complimented my fluency and accent in recent years. I studied grammar, literature and diction.

I believe that phonics, sound/symbol relationships are one of the building blocks of basic literacy. English is a difficult language to learn because we borrowed it from many other languages. Having training on this essential skill helps the student along with the ability to decode word parts and use context appropriately. I was trained as a a reading specialist, which meant I learned to identify skills gaps, write clinical recommendations, and deliver instruction...I tutored young students in reading for many years.

I taught study skills to teens in a psychologist's office for several years. In my experience students may coast until they hit a speed bump in school because they don't know how to systematically plan their time, organize their work, and stay on task. Helping a student become more independent and successful gives me a thrill.

I enjoy working with students and their families to help them make life a little easier for everyone. With younger students i like to spend a few minutes at the end of the session keeping parents informed on progress and how they can reinforce the learning. I encourage you to call to discuss your needs and see if my approach is a fit for you and your student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am a former adult basic ESL instructor, which I did for five years. My master's degree is in elementary education with a specialty in reading. I was a reading specialist in elementary schools for six years. I worked extensively in business with clients who spoke other languages.

French

I studied French from gr. 7-college and lived in a special French House at University of Illinois where we spoke French all the time. My college minor was French. I am certified as a French teacher but didn't teach it in a school. I did speak French with clients when I worked in business.

Phonics

I hold life certification as a K-12 reading specialist in the state of Missouri. This included coursework and practice in diagnosis and remediation of students with difficulties reading, including the teaching of phonics. I worked as a reading specialist in public elementary schools for almost six years, and taught basic reading skills as a private tutor for many years thereafter. I help students use sound/symbol relationships and detection of patterns combined with context to decode new words.

Reading

I am a certified reading teacher in Missouri K-12 with 6 years of experience as a Title I reading teacher. I use a variety of approaches to reading instruction, and am willing to work with the materials and methods used in the school. I make sure that the student has the skills to decode effectively, derive meaning, and can use reading to learn across the curriculum.

Study Skills

I hold certification K-12 in Missouri as a reading specialist. I did coursework in adult education as part of my Master's level work in reading. I also taught introduction to College Reading at St. Louis Community College for one term. I taught study skills to adolescents for several years through the psychology office of Dr. Milton Rubin in St. Louis County (now retired). As a private tutor I also worked with students of all ages on incorporating effective study skills when working on subject matter in other areas. Areas covered include reading for meaning, reading textbooks, planning study time, test preparation techniques and other topics.
