About Alex

Carrying a a master's degree in education and ten years of experience as a full-time teacher, tutor, and learning facilitator, I am an extremely capable tutor. My students have ranged from preschool aged to clients completing doctoral course work. While English is my specialty, I also work with students on a range of social sciences and math up to College Algebra.

My approach typically involves discussing student goals with the client, conducting my own brief evaluation of the student's skills, and finally using a holistic approach to enhancing the students abilities. It is only through a mix of enrichment and more traditional education practices that a student becomes both invested and more proficient.

Tutoring for me is a special opportunity to work one-on-one or with small groups of students. It is in these contexts that I can more readily adapt to their specific needs and skill levels. I love tutoring for this reason. The learning is accelerated, personalized, and easily tracked across time. Also, students tend to enjoy this type of interaction so much more than traditional school.

I am qualified in all realms of English, whether the students are native speaker or just beginning to learn the language.

My hours are flexible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've tutored more than half a dozen elementary-aged students. My Master's is in Learning, Teaching and Curriculum, so my education supports my working with any age. My methods are a mixture of constructivist styled activities based on interest and perscriptive lessons when needed.

ESL/ESOL

I have helped English language learners ranging from pre-K to the PhD level. All of my students have gone on to have great success in terms of their confidence and strength in English skills.

Writing

I have taught both middle and high school English for over seven years as well as privately tutored students struggling with writing.
