About Channing

Hello, my name is Channing; I am a senior attending Washington University in St. Louis majoring in Chemistry and Applied Mathematics. I have tutored privately for approximately 3 years, including individuals in high school and elementary school. I generally like to do a problem or 2 while explaining it step by step. They are welcome to ask questions at any point, and I ensure your child feels confident by the time I leave. They are free to contact me at any point with any questions they may have. From here, I have the student try doing problems on their own, allowing them to take their time and understand what they are doing. I find most children generally tend to understand math better if they do it themselves to supplement the work we do together. It is great and very rewarding to see children understand the concepts and make connections because everybody thinks about problems differently, but gets the same answer.

Unfortunately, as I have a busy schedule, I want my time respected just as much as you do, I must charge cancellation fees (measured in hours before the schedules lesson time) for individuals who do not cancel within a reasonable time frame. These fees are as follows and are charged with respect to the length of the scheduled lesson.

12+ hours: free
8-12 hours: 5%
6-8 hours: 10%
4-8 hours: 25%
2-4 hours: 50%
1-2 hours: 75%
less than 1 hour: 100%

Exceptions will ONLY be granted for things out of your control such as family emergencies (sickness, death in family, etc.) or transportation issues (car trouble, public transit not running, etc.)

The lesson will start at the scheduled time unless:
1.) I am late, at which point you will only be charged from the point of my arrival, rounded up to the nearest 5 min mark (to save you the most money possible because I am late)

2.) Family emergency (sickness, death, etc.)

3.) Severe weather is predicted at any point during the scheduled time of the lesson. I value my safety and the safety of others.

If you cancel, please let me know within 48 hours if you would like to reschedule, and I will try my best to fit our schedules at my next available time. If I fail to show up to a lesson or forget to cancel (within a reasonable time frame so you can adjust your schedule accordingly) the next lesson will be free. I am also willing to tack on extra time to a lesson upon request, and provided I do not have anything immediately following the lesson.

Group Tutoring:
I will do group tutoring. Each person within the group will be responsible for paying their share of the group tutoring cost, unless prior arrangements are worked out, and agreed on by all parties involved. Any online lessons for the group will cover the same material. Extra time will charged to the individuals who choose to take the extra time, and not for the whole group. Students must request extra work/problems if he/she/they want extra. The work will be given solely to the individuals who request it.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

Received at 30 on my ACT English section. I also speak 4 languages in clouding English, which helps my grammar and allow me to think about the question and the correct responses.

ACT Math

I received a 33 on my ACT in the math section and was 3 grades ahead in math starting in 4th grade. I have received an A in virtually every math class I have taken up through the high school level. A lot of the ACT math has tricks to it, allowing you to solve the problems in an efficient way with plenty of time for you to check your work.

ACT Reading

I received a 29 on the reading portion of the ACT and the 33 on the Math section of the ACT.

ACT Science

I received a 32 on my ACT and am majoring in Chemistry as Washington University in St. Louis. I am great with critical thinking and thinking on my feet, providing numerous ways to think about problems and skills.

Algebra 1

I took this class in 7th grade and received an A. I have a very good base in the material, both conceptually and applying it. I like to work fully through a problem and explain the reasoning behind all of the steps, then build the child's confidence and watch as he or she begins to understand and fly through the problems, solving what he or she once thought was difficult or impossible. I have also tutored a few students in this subject, bringing their grades to A's as well.

I am also majoring in math at Washington University in St. Louis.

Algebra 2

I took this class in 8th grade and received an A in the class. I have a very good base in the material, both conceptually and applying it. I have also tutored a few students in this subject, bringing their grades to A's as well.

I am majoring in Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis.

C++

I have taught myself C++ and currently use it to develop programs for the graduate chemistry research lab I work in.

Calculus

I received an B+ in Calculus in high school and have a wonderful understanding of the theoretical and application as it pertains to higher level math classes. I am also majoring in Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis.

Chemistry

I am majoring in Chemistry and do research in Chemistry; therefore, I understand the concepts very well.

Chinese

I have taken Chinese since 6th grade and speak it fluently. I love to help people immerse themselves in languages and want them to think in the language they are learning to help them become used to speaking the language. I have received an A in every Chinese class I have taken and tested into 3rd semester Chinese at Washington University in St. Louis.

Elementary Math

I have tutored individuals in elementary math and raised their grades from C's and D's to A's and B's. I was able to make math fun for them and they went from hating math to loving it in one semester.

Elementary Science

Science has always been a passion of mine and I love to help children understand their science and show tangible application of their lessons to make it more interesting to them.

I have tutored a few students in elementary science and am also majoring in Chemistry at Washington University in St. Louis.

Geometry

I have tutored a few students in honors geometry and am also majoring in Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis.

Grammar

I speak fluent English, German, Chinese and Spanish. All of the languages' grammatical structure reinforce each other, providing a greater ability to analyze grammar and teach it more effectively.

Linear Algebra

I took linear Algebra last semester at Washington University in St. Louis and received a B in the class. I worked with the professor to ensure I had a thorough understanding of the material, and also tutored other students here at the university in the subject.

Martial Arts

I was on the national team for 4 years, placed annually at the national tournament from 2008 to 2013. I won a bronze medal at the 2009 WSKF World Championships in Beijing China and a gold medal at the 2012 Pan American Tournament in Gatineau Canada. Current Shodan (1st degree black belt).

Microsoft Excel

I have worked with Excel since 7th grade and currently do the Excel work for the church of which I am a member. I also was a "teacher assistant" for my high school's excel class, helping my classmates with questions on the Microsoft Suite.

I have played music since 18 months (Kindermusik program) and started piano at the age of 6. I have taken lessons in classical music and can read, play, and have composed music since 13 years old.

Prealgebra

I have tutored a few students in pre algebra and am also majoring in Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis.

I took pre algebra in 6th grade and excelled in it, receiving an A in the class, while gaining valuable insights in pre algebra theory and application in other branches of mathematics.

Precalculus

I have tutored a few students in precalculus and am also majoring in Mathematics at Washington University in St. Louis.

I excelled in precalculus in 9th grade, and received an A in the class, ensuring I had a thorough understand of the material. I am also great at making connections between pre calculus and calculus.

Probability

I took this class in conjunction with Algebra 1 and 2 in high school and received an A in the class. I am capable of explaining and clarifying all of the ideas and differentiating clearly between similar ideas. This along with the experience of tutoring high schoolers while being one myself allows me to open the door to understanding mathematics in-depth.

Proofreading

I have proofread papers since junior year of high school. I grasp the grammar rules and spelling of English words because of the languages I speak, making English grammar much easier.

Good Job!

I needed a tutor the same day I submitted an inquiry and he was able to meet. He met for 2 hours and did a good job explaining the Chemistry information that the teacher couldn't. I ended up with a higher grade (than expected) on the test I needed to do well on to boost my grade. Channing was quick to communicate with me and reasonable priced. Would recommend to anyone for Chemistry.
