About Deborah

I have more than 30 years of professional educational experience to help you or your student to learn! I have been a teacher, school counselor, school diagnostician, college instructor to teach teachers how to teach, and an instructor in how to learn and teaching study skills for success! I have most recently worked with students with special needs such as autism and learning disabilities as a personal tutor. I have had my own tutoring business during my entire career and have taught how to use the computer, and how to read to adults, teens and children. I recently worked three years with a young adult on the autism spectrum, and we went from basic math skills to obtaining his GED! I make sure the developmental skills are solid so one can improve!

My specialization is to understand how my student learns and teaching to their strengths while improving their weaknesses. I have an excellent understanding of learning disabilities and learning difficulties. I meet the student where they are and gently lead them to success for their needs, while being realistic regarding goals.

I have written many diagnostic evaluations and have attended more IEP's than I would ever be able to count. I advocate for the student and the families if needed and have a good understanding regarding how the educational system works. I know how to communicate to educators and administrators regarding student needs. I believe in lifelong learning and meeting "learning opportunities."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have aided in the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD as a school counselor and private consultant. I am certified in Learning Disabilities and have been an Educational Diagnostician. I have worked successfully with many ADD with or without Hyperactivity students!

Aspergers

As an elementary school counselor (ten years), I worked with several Aspergers students. I worked with them regarding classroom interventions that were needed. i worked with the teacher and parents regarding teaching techniques as well as other interventions needed such as social skills, etc. I aided in getting several students diagnosed with Aspergers, then followed up with their IEP's, etc. I saw these students on a daily basis and checked in with them often. I did counseling as well as tutoring with these students. My state certifications and lifelong professional experience include Elementary Education - K-8, Remedial Reading - K-12, Learning Disabilities - K-12, School Psychological Examiner and School Counselor - K-8. Most of these certifications are for far in the future if not lifetime. There was no "Aspergers" certification at the time. I have worked with many students either as a educational diagnostician, a teacher, a school counselor in charge of interventions and getting the student diagnosed, and been part of countless IEPs. I have worked with many learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and learners "labeled" with a learning problem successfully!

Autism

I have recently worked very closely with students on the Autism spectrum. I worked 3.5 years with a young man where we worked on his reading and math (that were at about 4th grade level), to getting his GED! We further worked together for social skills and I shadowed him to get job experience for him. That was a success. I am currently working the past 8 months with an 8 year old female student. When she came to me she could not read. Now she is on a 2nd grade level phonetically and 1st grade level in comprehension. We also worked on handwriting and social skills.

My state certifications and lifelong professional experience include Elementary Education - K-8, Remedial Reading - K-12, Learning Disabilities - K-12, School Psychological Examiner and School Counselor - K-8. I have worked with many students either as a educational diagnostician, a teacher, a school counselor in charge of interventions and getting the student diagnosed, and been part of countless IEPs. Autism did not have it's own certification at the time. But I have worked with students on the autism spectrum both in the public school and one to one tutoring with success!

Career Development

As I was completing my Master's in Counseling at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, I interned in the College Counseling Center of St. Louis Community College at Meramec. I did much Career Development in this center. I have taken Master's level classes in career development as well.

College Counseling

I worked for ten years at a community college. In this setting I not only did my Master's in Counseling internship in the College Counseling Center, I also worked in a Reading and Study Skills Center. In this center, many students would come in for a variety of help. Many times they not only had needs academically but that could be handled better by the College Counseling center for which they were referred. I now have a Master's in Counseling from University of Missouri in St. Louis.

Dyslexia

Teaching reading for those with reading problems is where my heart is, and I have been blessed to have taught many. I have a Master's Degree in Remedial Reading and much of my 30 plus years of experience has involved teaching all ages Reading Skills. This includes adults and children with dyslexia as well as other learning disabilities and learning difficulties.

My state certifications and lifelong professional experience include Elementary Education - K-8, Remedial Reading - K-12, Learning Disabilities - K-12, School Psychological Examiner and School Counselor - K-8. I have worked with the students either as a one to one tutor, an educational diagnostician, a teacher, a school counselor in charge of interventions and getting the student diagnosed, and been part of countless IEPs. I have worked with many learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and learners "labeled" with a learning problem successfully!

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taught many students, and especially enjoy this age group.

Even as an elementary school counselor, I went into each and every classroom and taught character education to all ages. Now that was a great challenge. I have taught all elementary subject areas and have subbed for all grades. I have taught one on one and in a classroom.

I have worked with gifted students to special needs students and many with learning disabilities, or learning difficulties, or no learning problems at all, successfully!

Handwriting

I have developed several learning labs. I have taught handwriting in these experiences. There are steps and processes to learn with handwriting as any other subject, as well as an understanding of fine motor skills and learning disabilities that might be associated with handwriting.

One on one, I also have worked on handwriting with students in the autism spectrum. We have worked on printing as well as cursive. I once also tutored a nurse to improve her handwriting to keep her job. This was successful.

My state certifications and lifelong professional experience include Elementary Education - K-8 (including handwriting), Remedial Reading - K-12, Learning Disabilities - K-12, School Psychological Examiner and School Counselor - K-8. I have worked with many students either as a educational diagnostician, a teacher, a school counselor in charge of interventions and getting the student diagnosed, and been part of countless IEPs. I have worked with many learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and learners "labeled" with a learning problem successfully!

Phonics

I believe I know phonics backwards and forwards. I have been tutoring one to one for 30 plus years. I have usually tutored reading. I have found that those with reading problems often stem from the lack of phonics. Right now I am tutoring an 8 year old on the Autistic spectrum. She was totally illiterate last December when I began working with her. We have been working on basic phonics and advanced phonics since then. She is now a 2nd grade reader with excellent decoding skills. Now we move on to comprehension skills. I do have a Masters Degree in Remedial Reading as well. I have also been certified in the Laubach method of teaching adults to read. This is mostly phonic instruction. Because I have worked with adults and children with poor reading skills, much of the instruction is phonetic in nature. I believe on of my specialties is to break down where the learning problem is and to correct that. Phonics is to reading as number understanding (and multiplication) is to math. It is an integral part of reading instruction!!

I have worked with many learning disabilities, learning difficulties, and learners "labeled" with a learning problem successfully!

Reading

I am K-12 Reading Specialist and I have a Master's degree in reading.

Special Needs

Study Skills

I have taught, while on faculty at Missouri State University and St. Louis Community College at Meramec, Study Skills for Students. These were classes formally given by the college and university. I also have worked in the St. Louis Community College at Meramec Reading and Study Skills Center where we worked with students daily on these skills.
