Hi, my name is Angela H, and I found my passion for tutoring when I was only fourteen years old. My first student was a fifth grader who had just moved from Taiwan to California. He was struggling with nearly all the aspects of English: grammar, reading, writing, spelling, etc. I utilized every resource I could find—from library books to my old language arts homework assignments—and created lesson plans that interested and challenged him. One day, after six months of tutoring lessons, his mother came up to me with a beaming smile and told me that his grades in language arts went from D’s to B’s. From then on, my love for the English language and teaching began.
I graduated from University of California--Davis with a B.A. in both Linguistics and Chinese. Through an on-campus "Acquiring Language Program", I worked as an English tutor for phD and masters degree students whose primary language was not English. Furthermore, I was an English private tutor to elementary school, middle school, and high school students. During my summer breaks, I traveled to Taiwan and worked as an English Director for numerous English summer camps; I created lesson plans, trained other English teachers, and personally taught English to over 50 students every summer.
After I graduated, I spent a year in a Speech Language Pathology Masters Program at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. As a graduate clinician, I worked at elementary schools—providing therapy sessions for children with various speech and language impairments. For reasons related to family, I left my masters program, moved to O’Fallon, Missouri, and am currently applying to a nearby graduate school. Since my enrollment will not start until September 2015, I have decided to return to my love of tutoring and look forward to working with you in the near future.
Over the course of these years, I have interacted with a variety of students and have learned to effectively communicate with all sorts of students. I am also a very patient person who uses innovative teaching methods to make sure the student has thoroughly understood and assimilated the material.
My teaching services include homework/school work help and structured lesson plans created to engage and challenge the student.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received a vocational degree from the Full-Time Training in Anaheim--a two-year Bible truth and church service post-graduate program. I thoroughly studied the Bible and supplemental ministry readings. Furthermore, I was assigned to a community college as a Bible studies mentor five days a week for the entirety of my time in the program. With my training in and ongoing passion for the Bible, I am here to help you dive into the Bible in a living and applicable way.
I received a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Linguistics and Chinese at University of California--Davis (UC Davis). While at UC Davis, I interned as an English/Chinese interpreter and translator for master's degree and PhD students. Furthermore, I spent two years in a post-graduate program mentoring Chinese-speaking college students in Mandarin. With these background experiences, I look forward to helping you with whatever your needs and interests are in regards to the Chinese language.
I have worked on English and math with elementary school students for over 7 years in both school and private tutoring settings. I was an English Director for K-6th English summer camp programs in Taiwan for four years. Furthermore, I have been a speech therapy graduate clinician at three different elementary schools for K-6th students.
English Teaching Experience:
I have worked as a private English tutor to Masters Degree and PhD students for three years while I was an undergraduate student. While in college, I was also student teaching in high school English classrooms. Furthermore, I was a private English tutor to junior high students who were struggling with writing, reading, literature, and grammar.
I have worked as a speech-language pathology intern in three different elementary schools. As an intern, I worked with elementary school students in phonics--among other areas of the English language. My students have ranged from 3 years old to 8th graders.
I have 15 years of piano performance experience, and this year will be my 4th year as a piano teacher. I have had students who range from 4 years old to adults. Though I have been trained in an array of genres, my areas of expertise are in: classical music, contemporary music, and sight reading.
I spent two years in a Bible Truth and Church Service vocational program where we were trained in public speaking in large settings. We were required to prepare and present speeches to 375 students on a daily basis. Furthermore, we also spoke at conferences that consisted of over 5,000 attendants. Apart from an educational background, I also have teaching experience in public speaking. As a speech-language pathology graduate clinician, I worked with patients and clients who had speech impediments and phobias concerning public speaking.
