Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

Regarding my educational background, I have taken several courses in special education, including research and understanding about ADD/ADHD and how to successfully teach students with this problem (providing small tasks/"chunks", arranging desks away from high traffic areas and away from doors and windows where distractions are greatest). I have also been a full-time teacher and tutor for students who have this diagnosis and have experience in logging their times and behavior as it relates to the diagnosis.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have tutored a student with Autism since 2010. My work with this student centers on patience, breaking up the work into pieces/chunks and visual/picture representation of ideas so that he can have success and understand what he has accomplished. Recently, I took and passed an exam for severely disabled students, allowing me to teach in schools where Autism is prevalent. I currently work at a school for developmentally disabled students and will teach special education here this summer.

Bible Studies

I have led Bible studies at my church for over ten years. A few years ago, I taught 5th and 6th grade summer for a local Christian non-profit (Restore St. Louis - Firm Foundation Tutoring). Here, the last hour of the day, I led a Bible study on God's promises, focusing on various scripture passages throughout the Bible that show God's promises to multiple people and generations. Other Bible studies I have led include the book of Genesis and Acts.

Chess

I have played the game of chess for well over ten years now. I consider myself a very good player and know how all the pieces move and the rules of the game. I have taught several people how all the pieces move and the rules of the game. Combined with my education background, I provide descriptive, easy-to-understand steps to understanding the game.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am certified to teach elementary, grades 1 through 6, in the State of Missouri. My certification in this expires on 7/31/2018. Throughout my education career, I have taught 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 6th grades in school districts throughout St. Louis.

English

I have taught and tutored English as a second language to immigrants, including teaching the fundamentals of the language, proper grammar, and sentence structure.

Golf

I have played golf for more than 20 years. In high school, I played golf my junior and senior years, scoring in the top six on the team, which allowed me to compete and have my score accepted during competition. I know the game quite well and know all the proper techniques to have a good, solid golf swing, including proper grip, ball set-up, stance, head position and release of the golf club.

Reading

I've tutored reading for years now. I know many strategies and utilize and reading website to help my students build comprehension and reading accuracy.

Special Needs

Since January, I have devoted my education career in the area of special education. I have worked at two schools for severely disabled children, following all protocol, including privacy, sanitary, grooming/changing and teaching. I recently took an exam to get certified in severely disabled children and passed the exam. In addition, I have tutored a student who has special needs (Autism) since 2010. As a teacher, I have worked closely with special education teachers regarding IEPs and their proper implementation in my classroom. My other credentials include a Master's in Education and certification in elementary, grades 1-6. This summer, I will teach special ed at a school for severely disabled children.

Reading and comprehension

Donny worked with my 7 year old grandson on reading and comprehension. He shared tips with what to do at home. He was patient and by the end of the lesson my grandson was comfortable with him and eager to do more. That is half the battle!
