I have a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and worked as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. In addition, I have been teaching or tutoring both General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at both the high school and college levels for over 20 years. I have taught Honors, General and AP chemistry at the high school level and General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at the college level, so I am very familiar with the curriculum.
My teaching strength comes from being able to take the complex topic and break it down into little pieces that are easily understood by a student. Because every student is different and learns differently, I adapt my teaching style to the needs of the student. Some students need a lots of examples while others need straight explanations. Each student I work with sets the pace and style for the work we do. I have tutored students in General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry at the many different universities in the area including Georgetown, George Mason, George Washington, Howard, NOVA and American University. I have also worked with students taking many other chemistry courses - from Chemistry for non-majors to Biochemistry to graduate spectroscopy. Working together, we will find a way to improve your grades and test performance. I have a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry and worked as a research scientist in the pharmaceutical industry for many years. We stumbled upon David in a mode of panic after my AP Chemistry student (grade 11) started to stumble in quiz scores. David is thorough and concise explaining material thoroughly. Having taught the subject before, he knows how to present the material on the students level. My daughter came home from her first session stating. "I can tell he is a teacher by the way he speaks slowly as he is reviewing and explaining my questions". Her two past quiz scores have been in the low 90's and she is anxiously waiting on her last test score (feeling good about it).
I contacted David to help my daughter with her college level organic chemistry final. Although I reached out to close to the last minute, he was quick to respond and very flexible in making time to meet with my daughter. She said he was very encouraging and helpful, and her understanding of the material improved with his help. I won't hesitate to ask David for help again in the future.
David came to help my daughter prepare for her chemistry final - specifically to work on concepts she didn't understand. Following her session she feels confident in the subject material she was struggling with and felt he explained it in a way that helped her to understand. We both thought he was very nice and good to work with. Thanks to David - we will definitely call him again if she needs further help in chemistry.
David is a patient and methodical teacher. My daughter has regained her confidence working with him. I highly recommend him. I am very happy that we found him.
A pleasure to work with. David had a wonderful, warm style that drew out my somewhat timid daughter. He was patient and wanted to make sure she understood the material. I will definitely use him again!
Great lesson for my son. David was able to explain the material in a manner that was easy to comprehend. My son always feels much more confident about the concepts and David has brought his test grades up to B+.
My son has commented that David takes the difficult material and breaks it down into smaller tasks that are easier to understand.
My son was struggling with chemistry in high school and avoiding tests. David went back to the basics and spends as much time as necessary on each topic until he is satisfied that my son is confident that he understands it before he moves on. David teaches the theory in a way that makes sense, provides meaningful analogies and then provides practice questions to ensure that the topic has been fully grasped. David is patient and approachable. He has been very flexible with the schedule and always responds quickly. I wish we had found David sooner. I think his rate is a bit higher than some other chemistry tutors but worth it.
Our son is a freshman in the Honors Biology program at UNC and is currently receiving Chemistry tutoring from Dr. David V. We have found Dr. V. to posses a very detailed knowledge of the subject matter and to be very patient and methodical when teaching our son. We feel that our son had benefited greatly from working with Dr. V and we hope to continue using his services in the future for all his Chemistry and Biology courses.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I took and passed the bar exam this past July (NC Bar no. 46469) when the pass rate statewide was extremely low. I developed a system that worked very well for me using both Barbri and Kaplan review courses. I combined my studying with several other people who were taking the exam for the 2nd and 3rd times, and both of the other two people passed.
I have taught Chemistry at many different levels, including Honors and AP Chemistry at the high school level along with college General Chemistry at several different universities around the country. During the past five years, I have tutored extensively at UNC-Charlotte, working with students in all freshmen chemistry courses, including Principals of Chemistry and General Chemistry. I know what it takes to succeed in this difficult subject and will work with each student to find his or her own route to success.
I have a Ph.D. in chemistry from UNC-Chapel Hill and worked in the pharmaceutical industry doing organic synthesis for many years. I have been tutoring organic chemistry for over 20 years and have taught organic chemistry (both lab and lecture sections) at several universities. I have also tutored extensively at a university for the past five years for students in both Organic 1 and 2 along with focused reviews for the American Chemical Society standardized exam administered at many universities around the country.
