I have a great deal of experience teaching writing and speaking skills both to native English speakers and to foreigners. I was the Educational Vice-President in a corporate Toastmasters club, and hosted my own radio talk show. I have published literary essays and have been a high-level technical writer in many industries. I regularly use logic, math, and research techniques in my daily work, so I am well-qualified to teach these subjects. As a musician, I know voice training and composition as well as the violin instrument. I have teaching experience with several tutoring agencies and many adult-training centers, both in-person and online.
My teaching philosophy is to enable my students to ask better and better questions, and to realize their own answers by my showing them how to think about the problem. I consider everything to be connected to each other, so an understanding in one area leads to comprehension of other subjects and problems. I can give you single answers to specific questions, but you would benefit much more by spending some time with me to grasp the underlying concepts; then everything becomes easy! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
1. English was my first major in college.
2. I have been a professional technical writer for many years, so I know how to write according to strict standards, even on subjects which I had not previously known.
3. I have published essays in a literary quarterly, so I know how to write for a specific audience.
4. I have completed requirements for a research PhD, so I know how to construct correct English sentences and papers.
5. I have a very clear understanding of the components of grammar, including diagramming.
6. I have ample experience in tutoring English-related subjects to teens and adults, both native-born and foreign.
I was a Toastmasters club Educational Vice-President for two years, and also presented a Speechcraft for Management project at the host institution. Afterwards, I was the Area Judge for competitions in central Los Angeles, 1986-87. In 1988 I gave weekly broadcasts, on self-development topic, on my own radio program (KFOX-FM) for six months, and also guested on numerous other programs. For the next six years I gave many speeches at metaphysical churches and at the Whole Life Expo. I have tape recordings of my radio broadcasts, and my Expo presentations are on my website. Since then, I have kept up my speaking 'chops' by teaching classes in my Meetups.
With my Master's degree in Computer Science and my upcoming PhD in Research Psychology, I have had to master study skills which would allow me to attain high grades in these difficult subjects. In addition, my work career has required me to quickly learn the essentials of financial systems, telecommunications, manufacturing, and aerospace requirements; therefore I had to learn how to apprehend many technical subjects in various industries. I know how to break down complex problems into manageable chunks.
