Bio

Hi! My name is Kevin, and I've been tutoring students of all ages and abilities for over nine years. My primary focus is STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math), but I also help students succeed in computer programming and in test prep (ACT/SAT/GRE). I believe that, with the right support and attitude, anyone can learn to do anything! My students validate this belief every day.

I began tutoring when I was getting my degree in mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman (Terre Haute, IN), the top-ranked undergraduate program in the country. I lived in a sophomore dorm and provided support to students of all majors. This experience propelled me into education, as I later founded my own tutoring business and taught engineering at an all-girls middle school. I have done several years of graduate research at Purdue University (W. Lafayette, IN) and have run SAT prep programs at a Sylvan learning center. I have over a thousand hours of experience in most of the subjects I tutor, and I'm constantly pushing to improve. Whether you're a high school student struggling with math for the first time, a college student trying to run the gauntlet of engineering classes, or an adult learner looking to brush up on concepts you've forgotten, I can help you succeed!

Wash U students: I live next to campus and am able to meet you anywhere on the main campus or the south 40 very easily.

Computer

AutoCAD,

AutoCAD

I have been using various CAD and solid modeling programs for the past nine years, including AutoCAD, FreeCAD, Autodesk Inventor, SolidWorks, SolidEdge, and CATIA. Most of my work in these programs is geared towards drafting engineering drawings. I have many years' experience helping others learn to use CAD software as well as troubleshoot issues in existing drawings.
C,

C

I have eight years' experience coding in C. I have taken several courses that use extensive C programming (microchip programming, numerical solvers). I have some experience tutoring people in programming in a formal setting, but most of my experience is informal (e.g., helping coworkers with their code). When tutoring programming in general, my strategy is to teach the student the logic behind the structure and how to use references effectively. Rarely is route learning employed or encouraged.
C++,

C++

I have five years' experience in C++ programming, mostly with numerical solvers. I have taken courses that employ C++ to solve problems in fluid mechanics, granular flows, and general engineering problems. I also have experiencing debugging and troubleshooting large C++ programs used by the modeling community.
Computer Programming,

Computer Programming

I have over a decade's worth of experience in computer programming, including code development, debugging, maintenance, and teaching. Languages with which I'm familiar include (but are not limited to) C/C++, MATLAB, FORTRAN, and Java. Most of my programming experience is related to numerical methods (e.g., computational fluid dynamics), and I have tutored students in many different programming languages for engineering courses.
Linux,

Linux

I am an active Linux user and have been for over six years. I have experience in many of the popular Linux flavors (e.g., Ubuntu and Red Hat) as well as a number of niche varieties. I have experience with remote computing in a Linux environment and have written short guides on the subject. If you're looking for someone to help you understand Linux, particularly the command line, I'm both passionate about the subject and have practical experience. I am a mechanical engineer by training with two years of experience tutoring undergraduate engineering students at a top-ranked institute.
MATLAB,

MATLAB

I have been an active MATLAB user for seven years and am familiar with many of the languages and programs it uses (e.g., C, Java, and gnuplot). I have been tutoring engineering students in MATLAB course material for the past five years and have ample program debugging experience. I also am familiar with many of the MATLAB extensions and packages (e.g., Simulink). I can handle cases ranging from basic (e.g., first programming experience) to complex (e.g., graduate student attempting to write a research script).

Chemical Engineering,

Chemical Engineering

Though my department was Mechanical Engineering, my graduate studies in powder mechanics were widely considered to fall within Chemical Engineering. I have attended several ChE conferences and read numerous papers in the field. I have experience tutoring Chemical Engineering students at the undergrad level, especially in subject areas which overlap with Mechanical Engineering.
Differential Equations,

Differential Equations

I have a mathematics minor and have taken five courses in differential equations (DE) and many others which apply them in an engineering setting. I have many years' experience tutoring students in DEs of all types, including PDEs. I can teach both theory and application for many different solution methods, including series solutions and Laplace transforms.
Linear Algebra,

Linear Algebra

I've taken four courses in linear algebra at various levels and have tutored in the subject for over five years. My experience in using linear algebra is focused on numerical methods, but I have taught it in both practical and theoretical settings. I can also tutor linear algebra in engineering settings (e.g., solving large systems for vibration analysis).

Mechanical Engineering,

Mechanical Engineering

I have a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and have been tutoring students in the field for the past five years. I have worked with students on topics ranging from engineering fundamentals to advanced ME topics including (but not limited to) CFD, FEM, vibration analysis, and robotics. My tutoring approach in engineering is geared towards helping the student understand general concepts so they'll be able to tackle similar problems in the future.

Kevin is a Godsend!

My daughter met with Kevin twice a week this summer to help with two distance learning classes she was taking. University Physics 2 for engineers was remote and asynchronous. Kevin helped her not only understand the material, but stay on pace with the class and stay on top of her assignments. He is always prompt and easy to make a regular schedule with. He provides good feedback after each lesson. He has helped her stay on track and have success this summer.

Tons of knowledge - great teaching skills!

My daughter has being meeting with Kevin for help with her Differential Equations and Physics classes. Kevin has a wealth of knowledge that has helped her in these difficult classes. She shared that he makes things very easy to understand and helps her feel very comfortable trying to work things out on her own. He supports and guides her along while she is working on problems thus supporting her learning. He was easy to schedule, and prompt to all lessons. He is the perfect tutor to support her engineering classes. You will not be disappointed if you work with Kevin!

Very knowledgeable and reliable tutor

Kevin has taught 3 of my children during high school, covering AP Physics, Physics, Algebra II and Trig and Pre-Calculus. We have used other tutors and none have been as helpful and reliable. He is always prepared, on time and communicative about progress and goals. We have had 3 kids with different needs and he was able to help each very effectively. Highly recommend.

Really Knows His Stuff

My nephew reports Kevin knows physics inside and out and explains it very clearly. Kevin is also familiar with the university my nephew attends, which is turning out to be a huge plus.

Great Lesson

My daughter felt a new confidence with her Calculus as a result of her first session with Kevin. He carefully explained the material and gave her a far better understanding than she has had all year. Thanks so much!

Knowledgeable and patient

Kevin is teaching AP Statistics for my daughter. My daughter likes his teaching style and she is very confident now in her all tests and she improved her overall performance in the class. She is getting top grades after some classes with Kevin. We would like to use his services for different subjects if my daughter needs help.

Adaptable and Knowledgeable

Kevin was very helpful in the way he could come up with problems when you mentioned having trouble in a specific area very quickly. He also knew of several ways to explain things so that if one way didn't make sense, maybe another did.

Relatable and Effective

Kevin tutored my son in preparation for the ACT focusing on English. My son was amazed at how much he learned in just two sessions and felt very confident with the English section of the ACT. Kevin used basketball analogies which helped keep my son interested in learning. Will definitely utilize Kevin in the future.
