About Lyndsey

I am a graduate student in Education, as well as an interpreter, translator, and private language instructor for both English and Spanish, working with adults and children. (I thoroughly enjoy working with kids!) I am bilingual and have spent a considerable amount of time living, working, and studying abroad in various countries across Central and South America, Europe, and Southeast Asia. I love to learn and want to share my enthusiasm for knowledge with others! I remember fondly the educators that made the most positive impressions on me; these were the people that made learning fun and interesting. They taught their students that as long as you are making a real effort, your best is good enough and you should be proud of yourself and what you accomplish - I hope to teach this to my students, as well.

Not everyone learns in the same way, so integrating visual, auditory, and tactile activities is usually the best way to ensure that a person gets the most out of their educational experience. I believe in adjusting my teaching strategies to fit the learning style and intellectual strengths of the student(s) with whom I am working.

I have a passion for language and enjoy engaging others in their quest to learn new languages and perfect their communication skills through reading, writing, and conversation. I studied language and culture at Webster University (Spanish, Italian, and French) and graduated with a BA in Spanish. I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Communication Arts with Emphasis in International Languages and Cultures.

I have used my linguistic skills in a variety of settings such as healthcare, business, and education working as a translator, interpreter, and language instructor. I have served as a teacher assistant working with preschoolers in a Spanish immersion school, which was a wonderful experience! I have also worked as a long-term substitute Spanish teacher in the public school system, which was an enriching opportunity on many levels. I am currently working as an interpreter and translator for a local non-profit organization that works with the St. Louis immigrant and refugee population. I am very grateful for my education and many experiences, as well as the opportunity to share what I have learned with others.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Teaching at Webster University where my classes cover differentiated instruction (teaching to all styles of learning) and literacy reinforcement. My degree is for K-12, so I am covering effective teaching strategies for all ages.
I am a volunteer teacher with Junior Achievement and am currently working with a 5th grade class.

English

I am a native English speaker and have always excelled in Language Arts, graduating from high school with college credit already obtained through dual credit courses for honors English. I use the knowledge I have obtained through extensive reading and study to enhance communication of thoughts and ideas through the use of colorful and articulate language, as well as to correct sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. I am currently completing a degree in education, a Master of Arts in Communication Arts.

ESL/ESOL

I am a native English speaker with a strong background in language. I have worked with English language learners of many different ages to help improve their reading, writing, and speaking abilities. I can relate to the experience of learning a new language, as I myself have studied several foreign languages with the goal of achieving fluency.

Grammar

I am a native English speaker with an abundance of experience as an interpreter, translator, writer, and educator. I have studied language at the university level and am graduating with a Master of Arts in Communication Arts. I have been thoroughly schooled in proper grammar and sentence structure, which I successfully apply in my work as a translator, as well as in my numerous scholarly essays and research papers.

Proofreading

I have been writing and editing since I was a child for both work and pleasure. I have worked in administration for various companies and schools, being responsible for proofreading and editing a majority of the publications out for distribution, in addition to composing and translating newsletters and notices. In my master's program for education, I have taken a number of courses that focus on polishing writing skills, which includes proofreading and editing. I have also helped a number of my classmates in graduate school develop better proofreading and editing skills to produce higher quality assignments.

Reading

I have been an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction since I was very young and am literate in several languages. I love helping others find the joy in reading and tap into their power of knowledge acquisition through literary means. I have worked with both native and non-native speakers to improve their English literacy skills, as well as guided students in foreign language literacy. I am currently a graduate student at Webster University, completing a Master of Arts in Education for Communication Arts. I have experience as a high school Spanish teacher and a substitute teacher.

Spanish

I love the Spanish language! I have native level fluency in both written and conversational Spanish. Over the last decade, I have worked as a translator, interpreter, and language instructor in many different settings. I have spent significant time living, working, and studying abroad in Spain and various Latin American countries, including a year in Ecuador, where I studied at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. I studied Romance Languages at Webster University and graduated with a BA in Spanish. I am currently getting my MA in Communication Arts with an emphasis in International Languages and Cultures.

Spelling

As a native English speaker and an avid reader and writer, I have been exposed to a wide expanse of vocabulary on a consistent basis. As a result, I have had the opportunity to become familiar with the correct spelling of many words. Being someone that studies and is very passionate about language, I pay a great deal of attention to the elements involved in composing written works, including spelling. I am often the person that friends and coworkers consult when verifying the correct spelling words.

Study Skills

I am a substitute teacher and volunteer for Junior Achievement. I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Teaching at Webster University. I graduated with my BA with a GPA of 3.58 and am currently holding a 4.0 GPA in graduate school as a result of my strong studying skills and comprehension abilities.

Vocabulary

Through extensive reading and writing I have built a very expansive vocabulary and am well equipped to help others do the same, through coaching and strengthening reading and writing skills. I have taken many graduate courses on how to effectively help students build vocabulary and understand when and how to best utilize the words they know. I am currently completing a Master of Arts in Communication Arts.

Writing

I am an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction, and have been a writer since the age of eight. I love helping others find the joy in reading and tap into their power of knowledge acquisition through literary means. I excel at composing essays and academic papers and am an editor by nature. I am great with research and writing tips and am confident in my ability to help others achieve success with multimedia literacy. I am currently a graduate student in the Master of Arts in Education program at Webster University completing my MA in Communication Arts.
