About Katherine

I am a Preschool Teacher who loves to teach Reading and Writing. Because I very much enjoy working with children, I love working individually with students. In fact, I worked for a faith-based Literacy company called Access For Success. Specifically, this is a faith-based company wherein the teachers work with Elementary School aged inner city children in order to raise their Reading Achievement Scores. I worked with those children who were in 4th Grade. My job title was Reading Specialist, meaning I planned and implemented enjoyable, hands-on learning experiences for each child. In doing my assessments, the children raised their Reading Scores considerably.

In addition, I am trained in teaching Reading by using the Guided Reading Method. To be specific, I helped childen with their fluency and comprehension by reading authentic, enjoyable Children's Books as opposed to using Reading Textbooks.

Moreover, because I teach Reading and Writing simultaneously, I, also, planned and implemented developmentally appropriate, hands-on learning experiences so children could consider themselves authors. I strongly believe that children who write extensively improve their Reading Achievement Scores.

Finally, my own personal Reading Tutoring method is to create a warm, nurturing learning environment and make Reading a fulfilling and enjoyable experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Handwriting

I feel that I am qualified for the position of handwriting tutor, because I have taught handwriting to Preschoolers when I taught preschool for the St. Louis Public School District. In addition, I am currently taking courses to earn my Masters In Literacy Degree with a Reading Specialist Certification. As part of these courses, I am studying how the developmental stages of the writing process. Embedded in this is a handwriting component. Finally, when I was in undergraduate school, as part of my Methods of Teaching Language Arts Coursework, I had to learn the Zaner Bloser Style of Handwriting. Lastly, as a substitute teacher, I did learn the DeLeanian Style of Handwriting.

Phonics

I feel that I am qualified to tutor in the subject of phonics because of the following reasons: (1) One of the requirements in my Methods of Teaching Reading course, I had to take and to pass a Phonics Exam. Specifically, I had to pass a How to Teach Phonics Exam. A major part of this exam was testing the undergraduate students on how well they knew and could teach the rules of phonics. In addition, I have had experience teaching Phonics when I held the position of Reading specialist.

Reading

I am qualified to tutor in this subject area because I passed the test with a score of 100%. In addition, I feel that I am qualified because I am a voracious reader and thus have the reading skills to impart to anyone that I tutor. Furthermore, I have been a Reading Specialist for a local company called Access For Success, founded by Josh Goldman. Finally, I have experience in teaching young children to read and to write and have volunteered with Oasis as a reading tutor with the Rittenour Public School District. As a tutor, I used various strategies to teach visualization, comprehension, phonemic awareness, and fluency in reading. For the reasons described above, I feel that I am qualified to tutor in this subject area.

Writing

I feel that I am qualified to tutor in the subject area of writing for the following reasons. First of all, I feel that I can communicate effectively through writing. In addition, I feel I have a good command of the written English Language. Therefore, I can teach my tutoring student in communicating effectively through the written word.
