Hello, I’m Dr. Amy R! I have an MA and a PhD in English and I have been teaching composition and literature at the college level for over ten years. In grad school, I maintained a 4.0 GPA. Since then, I’ve taught at several different universities, and I’m an expert at adapting my teaching style to the needs of my students. Most of my experience is with students ages 18-22, but I’m equipped to tutor anyone from 15-95! I care passionately about what I teach, and I believe that the skills you...

I care passionately about what I teach, and I believe that the skills you learn studying literature and practicing composition are some of the most valuable skills for our modern world. Still, I recognize that each of my students is coming from a different context, and I make sure to adapt my tutoring to your situation. I see it as my role to expand my students’ ability to think for themselves, and to approach a text or assignment with confidence and preparedness.

I can help you prepare the writing, reading, research, revision, and critical thinking skills you’ll need in college, and I can help you navigate the college courses and assignments themselves. I specialize in giving professional and personalized feedback on writing that’s at any stage of the composition process, from brainstorming through to the final polish. I have a great deal of experience working with research papers (whether at the high school, college, or grad school level), creative writing, theses and dissertations, literary analyses, academic articles, etc. I can help you increase your vocabulary, communicate clearly, develop research skills, and improve your own writing. I’m happy to facilitate your engagement with and comprehension of any book or reading that you find difficult.

I look forward to working with you!

Grammar

Grammar

I have an MA and a PhD in English and I have been teaching composition and literature at the college level for over ten years, and I would love to help you with any grammar-related questions or tasks. Don't feel bad if this is something you struggle with; English is a notoriously difficult language to learn, to understand, and to use properly. This is partly because English is a language that has borrowed heavily from a myriad of other languages throughout its history, sometimes keeping the grammar rules of the original language, and sometimes not!
Literature

Literature

I have an MA and a PhD in English and I have been teaching composition and literature at the college level for over ten years. In the classroom, I act as a guide rather than as a lecturer; I genuinely want to hear my students’ questions and insights and conclusions about the material. I see it as my role to expand their ability to think for themselves, and to interrogate a text or approach an assignment in the most confident, prepared, and accurate way possible. I would be delighted to facilitate your engagement with and comprehension of any book or reading that you might find difficult.

Knowledgeable

Amy help my daughter with understanding a very complex book. She read out loud with her and helped my daughter see key points of the story. She made it fun and engaging for her to continue to read her book.

Fabulous!

Amy was wonderful, she was very personable, easy to work with. It was the best tutoring session I have had to date :). She was able to help me navigate my online class, and as a returning student this was very helpful.

Amazing for med school apps!!

Amy has been extremely helpful in reviewing my medical school application (activities and personal statement). She has proofread my essays and assisted with rewording to ensure they sound their best. Her keen eye for detail and insightful feedback have significantly improved the clarity and impact of my writing. On top of this, she is fun to work with! While the application process is extremely stressful, Amy makes it smooth and stress-free. I highly recommend Amy to anyone seeking to enhance their writing, especially for important applications.
