About Michael

Bio

I graduated magna cum laude in 2003 with a major in History and a minor in Chemistry.

I am currently in the Army Reserves, and I a firm believer in a disciplined style of teaching and learning. Using the maxim, "Repetition is the key to learning", I will incorporate plenty of practice not just to cram for a test but actually learn the material. Cramming for a test is only a short-term solution.

As a parent of a 2nd grader, my wife and I have homeschooled our son for the past three years, and he is well-above his grade-level in every subject in standardized testing. I also have tutored/mentored elementary age students in academics as part of a church youth program.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

In college, I helped fellow classmates prepare for exams. This lead me to start tutoring high school and college students. Since then, I developed a study habits guide which I have freely distributed to my students and their parents. A number of these parents have since expressed to me that the study guide improved their child's grades, understanding, and confidence.

Bible Studies

As an active member of Christian denomination of church for 20 years, I have attended many supplementary Biblical studies classes. In college, some of the courses which I used as elective were Biblical studies courses which I easily passed due to the intensive Biblical studies training in my church.
Social Studies,

Social Studies

As a former history teacher, social studies was incorporated and interwoven throughout the curriculum in which I taught. In some school districts, the courses History and Social Studies are used interchangeably. Having a Bachelor's degree in History more than adequately prepared me to tutor in Social Studies.

Sports/Recreation

Basketball,

Basketball

In junior and senior high school, I played basketball for my school. I was known for my high free-throw and three pointer percentage shots. Defense was also a strong point that was stressed by my coaches all throughout my years of playing, as well. My summers were reinforced by summer basketball camp, running drills with other teammates, etc. Outside of school time, we constantly practiced and trained.
Chess,

Chess

With a lifelong love of chess, I have participated in numerous chess tournaments in which I placed quite well. While I admit that I probably could not beat Gary Kasparov or Bobby Fischer (or even Deep Blue), I can certainly provide the strategy that I have acquired through years of study and watching films of great chess matches.
Football

Football

As a life-long lover of college football, I have studied the game in addition to watching and playing the sport. I played in high school and in college as defensive end, wide receiver, and safety. Knowing the rules of the game and how they are evolving over time has been a hobby of mine for the past twenty years.

ASVAB

I took the ASVAB less than two years ago as a pre-requisite to joining the US Army Reserves. Studying for two weeks was all of the time that I had at my disposal before I scored the highest GT score for the Duluth Army Recruiting Station. With a score of 128, I currently have the 2nd highest GT score of anyone in my Reserve unit.

Enthusiastic Asvab Tutor

During the first session with Michael, it was amazing how many people in the restaurant meeting spot were so impressed with him. He's understanding, patient and knowledgeable. We HIGHLY recommend him. You won't go wrong!

Very knowledgeable

He jumped in right away and I learned many new things, when asked a question he responded thoughtfully and thoroughly. He's also very realistic and knowledgeable in many aspects, not just about ACT. Great tutor.

Excellent tutor

He was able to help in a short notice and was extremely nice. He is an excellent ASVAB tutor and knows his stuff very well. He helped me not only prepare for the asvab but was also able to give me great advice about the military. He was greatly appreciated. I would definitely recommend him to another student.

Excellent Tutor

We found Michael to be most responsive and helpful with our daughter and her recent college level Chemistry I class. We reached out to him via WyzAnt and he got back to us very quickly. He met us when he said he would meet us and then followed up with her throughout the rest of the semester on a weekly basis. Our daughter commented on how he has the ability to break down difficult to understand abstract concepts into "real life" topics that she could relate to in order to help her grasp the material at hand. We would strongly recommend Michael to other parents seeking academic help for their children. Without a doubt he made a letter grade difference in her final grade.

A+ Tutor

We contacted Michael to help our 11th grade daughter in Chemistry. At the beginning of the second semester, and with her Chemistry class on their 3rd teacher, we started to see that our daughter had holes in her knowledge. After failing 2 tests and with a grade of 51, we hired Michael. He asked lots of questions on her learning styles and interests. He used this info and really was able to connect with her. From the very first session, he made sure that she understood the material they covered. He was encouraging and remembered when she had tests. He not only helped her with the Chemistry knowledge and filled the holes, he gave her the confidence that she could pass the class. She rocked her final - with an 86%! and ended up with a B in the class. We are very happy and highly recommend Michael. Thanks so much. PS. As Chemistry tutoring was going so well, we asked him to help her review for the Advanced Algebra final as well!

Excellent tutor

My daughter has had three lessons with Michael so far and all have been very beneficial. Michael is great at explaining the material and truly excellent at leading the kids to understand concepts and the process to get to a solution in every case. Michael is professional, friendly and punctual. We hope to engage him again in the foreseeable future.

Came to our rescue!

Our daughter was having trouble learning from her Math teacher. Their teaching/learning styles just weren't meshing well. With two weeks left in the semester she had an 82%. Her test average was only 71%. She had one chapter test and the final left. She needed B's on both or her grade would drop to a C. We contacted Michael and he was quick to communicate and schedule with us. He asked me questions about her learning style, personality, strengths, and interests so he would have some ideas of what would help her learn. After the first session I knew she was "getting" it. Michael explains things in a variety of ways until he sees that light-bulb moment. Then instead of moving on, he reinforces that idea until the student is confident with it. We only had time for one session before her chapter test. She got 102%! We had another session before the final. She got a 97%! In just two sessions, Michael was able to sort out and fill in the gaps of the entire semester and restore our daughters confidence. The icing on the cake is that her grade went from 82% to 90%. She has never been more proud of an A. I'm so grateful we found Michael. I give him my highest recommendation.
