About Michelle

I have always loved the English language and have had great experience teaching it through homeschooling my 4 children (currently ages 10-18) for the past 12 years. My oldest child scored a 34 on the English portion of the ACT this year. I have a 4-year degree from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

I love proofreading papers (mistakes just jump off the page!) and teaching all language arts subjects and elementary math. It's wonderful to see the strides that can be made with one-on-one instruction. Students learn efficiently when they receive individual attention that targets the areas that need work.

I'd love to help you or your child succeed!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have homeschooled my children for over 12 years. Teaching English to them has reinforced my love for the language. From a young age, I have been excellent at grammar and spelling. Now I have a lot of experience passing on that knowledge to others. My oldest child scored a 34 on the English portion of the ACT!

Elementary (K-6th)

Having homeschooled my 4 children for over 12 years, I know the importance of the early years of formal education. They are critical in setting the stage for future learning. Early learning should focus on building a foundation for future success through reading, writing, and math, which I am able to accomplish with one-on-one instruction.

Elementary Math

I have homeschooled my children for over 12 years. Using examples from real life, I teach concepts in ways specific to each student. I also use various manipulatives to illustrate lessons in a visual manner.

English

As a homeschooling mom for over 12 years, I have a lot of experience teaching English. I have always been good at English and enjoyed it very much. Teaching it to my kids has reinforced my love for it and my knowledge of it.

Grammar

I have long been infamous among my family and friends as someone who spots every grammatical mistake in written and oral communication! Having over 12 years' experience teaching my own children has only made me more conscious of proper English grammar. Grammar rules are generally very clear and I enjoy the process of relating those rules to others who are interested.

Phonics

I have homeschooled my 4 children for over 12 years, and I taught them all to read using phonics. My oldest child took the ACT last year and scored a perfect 36 on the reading portion. The phonics method, which is basically breaking the English language down into its separate sounds and learning the spelling of those sounds, is the best way to ensure long-term reading success.
