## knowledgeable and passionate teacher

Elizabeth, 12 lessons with TapiTapi is clearly passionate about teaching math. My daughter switched schools and started behind in algebra by seven weeks. He got her up to speed over a weekend. He was flexible, accommodating, patient, and persistent. We will continue to work with him regularly.

#1 Tutor on Wyzant in the Summer of 2015!!!!

Covid-19 and remote classes have negatively impacted student learning and amplified the need for educational support as students who had never struggled before start to fall behind for the first time.

However, any educational problem can be fixed, assuming the basics are mastered. There is hope.

Above the level of hope is competence. I am referring here to the competence of a skilled tutor who has taken on hundreds of students over a...

Elementary Math,
#### Elementary Math

I have been teaching Elementary Math for 15 years, ranging from basic 3rd grade arithmetic to 6th grade topics like decimals, percents, volumes and averages.

Study Skills,
#### Study Skills

I studied Educational Methodology as part of a brand-new system developed and tested on several continents across a wide spectrum of students from different backgrounds and of different ages.
The common outcome of this program is that students have a renewed interest in subjects that were previously 'boring' or 'difficult' or 'useless' to them. They begin to learn and study independently. They score way above average on all types of tests. They experience a gain of several reading levels.
They begin to modify their own behaviour while acquiring a repertoire of new skills and new habits that will last them a lifetime.
In short, study and learning becomes easy, even joyful.
I have seen numerous results with these techniques over 17 years and I'm always amazed at the consistency of results.

Algebra 1,
#### Algebra 1

Algebra 1 can be tough for young students transitioning from middle school math but I have developed simple techniques for solving complex problems so that my students get the same test results as they did in early math classes.

Algebra 2,
#### Algebra 2

I specialize in teaching advanced and honors Algebra 2 classes. All the complicated topics can be easily understood with my simplified explanations. Trigonometry in particular is susceptible to a rapid introduction that empowers students to solve all types of problems using only 19 tools.

Calculus,
#### Calculus

Calculus deals with constant change in situations such as motion, growth and decay. I have helped many students truly appreciate the value of calculus in real life so they can become motivated to tackle the material and succeed on tough courses. The classes I cover include high school calculus, Calc AB/BC, all the way up to College Calculus 2.

Geometry,
#### Geometry

Geometry demands knowledge and application of essential theorems, axioms and postulates. I have helped many students master the basics and learn how to apply the principles of geometry in seemingly dis-related subjects.

Prealgebra,
#### Prealgebra

Pre-Algebra introduces students to the basics of solving equations by balancing both sides. It also includes other topics that utilize variables. I have helped many students gain the skills and confidence they need to succeed in both pre-algebra and algebra itself.

Precalculus,
#### Precalculus

Pre-Calculus covers many topics that range from vectors to limits. I have found that students benefit the most from pre-calc classes when they comprehend the underlying concepts of each topic. This can get lost in honors classes due to the speed required, so I help by illuminating the basics and clearly demonstrating the real-life applications of each concept.

SAT Math,
#### SAT Math

The new SAT Math tends to be much more descriptive than the previous one. It requires that a student break down each question and implement logical steps which can be used to rapidly solve the problems.
Precise diagnostic tests, extra practice and proper techniques are the best remedy for poor performance.
I have helped many students master the skills they need to do well on this test.

ACT Math,
#### ACT Math

ACT Math tends to be less tricky than SAT Math as it mostly tests what a student has learned in school. I teach or reinforce the concepts first then I move on to time control and pacing because the test demands fast and accurate thinking. My approach has helped many students increase their scores on the ACT Math exam.

Chess
#### Chess

Chess helps students develop patience, tenacity and strategic thinking. According to Chessbase's Educator of the Year for 2019, Elizabeth Spiegel,
"One of the things I used to say to principals was, 'standardized tests are so important, but what could possibly be better training for a standardized test than chess? You're sitting there for 2-3 hours, you're not allowed to talk, you have to solve a series of difficult problems on your own...that is a standardized test.'
"Chess is an effective teaching tool because it:
a) Reaches a level of complexity that other subjects don't reach until later
b) Really pushes kids to do their own thinking and figure out their own problems and it's really a whole level more difficult [than equivalent subjects in elementary school].
c) Doesn't require advanced verbal (or reading) skills, and so it reaches populations who are lacking them
d) Directly rewards thinking with winning, and kids take to it even if they are not generally excited about school
e) Is emotional, and motivating
f) [Chess] is so hard and it's so devastating emotionally when you lose [that] you just have to get over it right away and play the next round, and I feel that's a really valuable character development lesson.
g) Provides immediate, authentic and accessible feedback (like music and maths)
h) Teaches focus
i) Teaches grit
j) Teaches you to be honest and self-critical about your decisions. Getting better at chess requires you to be incredibly honest with yourself [about] what you were thinking."

COOP/HSPT,
#### COOP/HSPT

I have helped many students do well on the Cooperative Admissions Program (COOP) test and gain entrance to the Catholic high school of their choice. The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is another common achievement test for those who want to enter high schools of different types. The contents of these tests are similar and I have obtained uniformly excellent results tutoring students in both tests.

ISEE,
#### ISEE

The ISEE offers many students an opportunity to write their own future by getting into their school of choice. The Independent School Entrance Examination is offered by ERB, the Educational Records Bureau.
The ISEE exam covers Verbal (vocabulary), Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Reasoning (ability to think with and use Math in unique situations) and finally it covers basic Mathematics techniques.
The test has different levels for different grades: Lower, Middle and Upper.
After tutoring many students in the ISEE I have found that the best preparation starts with a solid education in Basics. A reading program that emphases depth and breadth of extensive reading on a daily basis would be the ideal prep. The singular difference between students on the ISEE is simply vocabulary, knowledge of.
As for the test itself, I have found that students need 6-12 weeks to prepare for the ISEE proper. Utilizing texts from various test-prep publishers as well as the ERB website itself, I have been able to quickly teach test-taking skills as well as subject content to excellent results.

Praxis,
#### Praxis

I have tutored many students in the following Praxis topics: Numbers, Quantities, Algebra, Functions, Calculus, Geometry, Probability, Statistics. and Discrete Mathematics. The test itself is not too complicated but it is quite important to understand (not memorize) the formulas and mathematical notation. A well-defined study plan with extensive practice is essential to getting a good score on the test. I have successfully guided many students through all the steps needed to ace this test.

Tapi has provided examples of their subject expertise by answering **1 question** submitted by students on Wyzant’s Ask an Expert.

## Tapi is patient, helpful and effective.

Tapi is patient, helpful and effective in identifying what and how the student needs to improve and accomplishing it. Apparently I need 160 characters, and efficiencies not rewarded, so I hope this gets me to 160 characters.

## Highly recommend!!

With the craziness of COVID we decided to look into a tutor for my son who was struggling with at-home learning in high school honors math. I saw all the great reviews on Tapi and after the first lesson my son said "now I know why he's one of the top rated guys on Wyzant!" We saw a remarkable turn around in overall comprehension which translated into noticeably improved grades and have asked Tapi to start helping our other high schooler as well just to make sure he gets off to a solid start. I would recommend him highly to anyone looking for a math tutor!
