Hajimemashite.
Let me introduce myself.

I was born and raised in Tokyo, Japan.
I taught myself English.

I went to Sophia University in Tokyo for two years and then I was selected to represent Sophia at its sister school University of Massachusetts at Amherst. Instead of spending one year there as originally planned, I studied there for three years to graduate cum laude with a BA in English with a Certificate in Japanese Interpretation.

For the past two and a half decades, I have been a bilingual professional in various capacities. From 2007 to 2011, I taught Japanese at language schools in Boston. Since moving to Saint Charles, Mo, I have been teaching Japanese at home and at a local language school.

I have developed my own materials to go along with the Japanese for Busy People textbook series. I am patient, enthusiastic, and have a sense of humor. I believe that learning can be and should be fun. You will have an intense session of drills based on visual cues. You will find yourself talking in Japanese most of the time. I am not a teacher who writes on the blackboard all the time. In fact, I seldom if ever use it.

Having taught myself English I know what it's like to learn a foreign language. I will introduce hiragana, katakana, and kanji depending on your desire and level.

I look forward to meeting you, teaching you Japanese, and sharing with you my wealth of knowledge about my culture.

Great, knowledgable teacher

I've been taking Japanese from Ms. Yumi for a year now. In that year, I've gone from very rudimentary language skills to basic conversational skills and functional literacy. Since she is a native speaker, Ms. Yumi is able to give important grammatical insights and cultural contexts, which have been very valuable to me. With her examples and anecdotes, she makes learning fun. She is also very good about recommending Japanese media for additional listening practice, as well as providing supplementary texts and handouts. Learning Japanese has been a goal of mine for a long time and I've been lucky to have Ms Yumi as a teacher!

Knowledgeable and Excellent - our teen left excited and ready for next week!

She taught me how to ask for stuff politely, introduce people, and we learned counting. She also taught me how to say "what is your name?" I liked how quickly we really started learning things. I was very comfortable around her. I'm excited that we're already speaking the language and she answered my questions about things I didn't understand. She's a great teacher!

Excellent Instructor!

Having taught herself English, Yumi has a very good understanding of how students learn languages. She leverages that experience to structure lessons and provide students with tools to learn Japanese. Yumi supplements the textbook "Japanese for Busy People" with her very own worksheets and provides exercises and media such as movies and newspapers to take home and use as a study aid between lessons. During a typical lesson Yumi introduces new material from the text or from her own supplemental worksheets and will review material from previous lessons using her very own flashcards. Review is cumulative in order to help the student maintain his or her vocabulary. She is willing to work around the student's schedule and even reschedule lessons on short notice. I've had a very positive experience working with Yumi and would happily recommend her to any student desiring to learn Japanese.

Yumi-sensei is the best!

She's a fantastic teacher. You really will find yourself speaking Japanese 90% of the time. She has many learning materials (props, cards, etc) on hand. You can tell she's put a lot of effort into providing the best learning experience for her students. I look forward to each lesson!

Awesome Caring Tutor

Yumi made the cutest binder for my daughter to keep her learning materials. My daughter loves going to learn from Yumi and always is so happy when she comes home from her session. I highly recommend Yumi as a Japanese tutor for you or your child.

Works hard and cares about teaching!

My daughter looks forward to lessons and is learning. Yumi makes learning fun and really works hard to "drill" the knowledge.

Well-prepared

Yumi was my Japanese tutor before I left for Japan. Before I met her I had taken some Japanese in university, but if I had not taken lessons from her I know I would have placed much lower on my exams and I would have been uncomfortable talking in Japanese when I arrived in Japan. However, after tutoring for a few months I was much more capable and confident. I was able to join a club that was all Japanese students and place into a higher level Japanese course in the program I was in. She has lessons prepared for all of her students and can start from any level of Japanese knowledge. She's fun to talk to and an interesting person. I highly recommend her.

An excellent value. Personalized lessons to fit my needs.

Yumi matched the pace I needed. In areas where I was ready to move faster, she moved faster, and kept me challenged and progressing at my optimum pace. Whenever I struggled, she matched my pace, giving me extra time to catch up, so that I always understood the material before moving on to a new concept. Because she maximizes the use of the lesson time, she is an excellent value for every hour spent with her. She uses multiple teaching methods within a single lesson, for variety, which kept me concentrating and focused longer than usual. I loved the way she custom-tailored the lessons to meet some very specific needs that I have. She is a master teacher.

Patients

I hired you to teach my son Japanese, not to make any assumptions as to why he wants to learn your language. I understand your mother made you go to an English conversation school when you were in the 5th grade and was not ready or interested. I never made my son learn Japanese, it was solely his choice. I do need to apologize for the miscommunication about his age, but I emailed you several times informing you of his age, and grade. If you felt that you were not qualified or experience to teach elementary students. Why didn’t you tell me before your time started? Thank you.
