About William

I grew up on the West Coast and majored in Music Composition at CSU Fullerton in California with a minor in English. This about sums up my two loves in life....language and music, although music qualifies as another language! I left California and spent 17 years in the Pacific Northwest before coming to Missouri. Although my "official" work history is not in education, my life's work has been deeply intertwined with teaching music and the English language.
I have been helping people with English and playing music since I was a kid, and I love teaching both because I learn so much from my students. I always want to continue learning, and I hope that my passion for these subjects will be passed on to others!

I have been actively involved in helping people improve their English as a second language since I was young, growing up with immigrant families from Mexico and Southeast Asia. This has given me a great respect for the struggles people have with learning a new language, particularly when they seek to express themselves in the professional world. I was a state finalist in the Bank Of America Scholarship Awards, and have won various writing and essay contests. I spent years proofreading technical articles, medical studies, proofs for publishing and Federal Grant applications when I lived in the Pacific Northwest. I am a graduate of the Institute For Children's Literature, and spend quite a bit of time writing for the 8 -12 year old age range. I love to read and to write, and with that comes my passion of wanting to help others read and write well.

I majored in Music Composition while in college, and although piano is my primary instrument, I play several others. I have taught theory and sight-reading to individuals and classrooms as well as giving private instruction in piano. In addition to formal classical training, I had the unique opportunity to study Jazz Arranging under Andrew Charlton. I have been active in bands, played for numerous churches, have served as the music director/arranger/pianist for several musicals and Branson/Vegas style productions, and still get to do some solo piano work from time to time! I have done a lot of studio arranging and playing on albums, and am always looking to pass this knowledge on.

My lessons are totally customized to the student's individual needs, to provide both challenge and reinforcement for each step. I prefer interactive sessions and encourage questions, even stopping the "lesson plan" to make sure that the subject is clear and totally understood by the student. I believe that if you don't understand what I'm teaching, that's MY fault. I'm here for you, not the other way around. I am quite flexible in scheduling, and have a quick turnaround time on proofreading assignments.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Piano

I have played piano for more than 40 years, majoring in musical Composition at CSU Fullerton with piano as my primary instrument. I have given private lessons since I was 15 years old, and continue to this day. My influences range from the Baroque, Classical and Romantic periods to present day Jazz.
