Bio

I am a French and English Language Instructor with over eleven years of teaching experience.

I am the daughter of a Swiss mother and American father, and have always been fascinated by different languages and cultures from a very young age. I traveled to Switzerland to visit my family every summer as a child, so I know what it's like being in another culture and learning to communicate in another language.

My experiences growing up lead me to earn my bachelor's degree in French from Denison University in Granville, Ohio.

After graduation, my first teaching experience was as a Fulbright scholar in Nancy, France, where I taught English for a year to elementary school children. It was then that I realized my love for teaching and helping others.

I then continued my studies at the University of Southern California, where I received my master's degree and completed my doctoral coursework in French Language and Literature. During my five years there, I taught undergraduates beginning to intermediate French.

During my graduate work, I also took classes at UCLA to earn my certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.

After completing both my graduate degree and TESOL certificate, I began teaching French to middle and upper school students at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Peninsula. I spent a wonderful six years at this school until my husband was offered a job at the University of Kansas. We moved in February of 2015, and I have been tutoring ever since. It gives me much fulfillment to help others learn while forging lasting friendships.

I have always been interested in language learning ever since I was a little girl growing up in a multicultural family. My mother spoke French and my father spoke English, so I was exposed to both languages from a young age. My first job teaching English was as a Fulbright Scholar in Nancy, France, where I taught at three different elementary schools. I have since taught both French and English in various settings, ranging from undergraduates to middle and high school students. I teach using the natural (direct/communicative) method, where students learn the language naturally like babies learn their first language. My goal is for my students to be able to communicate naturally in real-world situations without having to translate from their first language. I have seen extraordinary results using this method.
