After years of building/teaching individuals and groups in both academic and corporate settings, it is clear that promoting or triggering a person's motivation to learn is paramount. Young people may struggle with a certain topic - science, history, math, business, etc., not because they don't have the intellect, but because they may lack the "spark" to self-drive their thirst to learn.
The spark that motivates a student's learning can be their self curiosity, a person/hero they want to emulate, or a benefit they can internalize for themselves. We have all experienced these motivations to learn. Learning to drive a vehicle is complex, but young people have no issue investing the time and study to get their license. The internal benefit is a new, adult step towards personal freedom - self motivation. Other learning requires discipline and dedication, but, it still demands an explanation of the learning benefit - this is often the role of the instructor/tutor to explain.
Hello, my name is Keith and I have instructed numerous persons in various topics. My expertise is in business and government and, over the years in preparing for numerous training sessions, a powerpoint software expert. Learning is a process and necessitates building a relationship between the student and instructor. Three components of this relationship building include:
1) Focus - what is being instructed/tutored, why it is important, and the expectation of results and timing to learn
2) Accountability - what are the learner's responsibilities, what are the instructor's responsibilities, and what will be the measures of success?
3) Teamwork - confirming to the learner that they have partners in their learning success - their teachers at school, parents and tutor

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
