I have been cooking for over 30 years and can make just about recipe. In cooking, I incorporate math (doubling or halving recipes, shopping lists, etch.) and science (chemical reactions vs. physical reactions, food pyramid, nutritional facts, etc.)
I relate very well with students, I'm creative, easy-going and like to use humor when appropriate as a means to help students retain information. At the same time, I am detail oriented and one who follows the rules. The vast majority of my students love that I'm "not like other teachers" and that I "make learning fun". In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been cooking for over 30 years. Even though my experience allows me to creatively deviate from a recipe, I have been trained to follow a recipe exactly and will pass both techniques on to my students. I believe it is important to provide the basic understanding of cooking methods, and then teach how recipes can be altered and improved upon. Also, being certified to teach science I can incorporate those aspects, after all a recipe is simply a scientific experiment and changing variables results in different outcomes.
I have 13 years of teaching experience in the public school setting. My niece home schools her children and often seeks my input and advice on methods, topics, and techniques. Being certified to teach science and social studies at the Middle and High school level, I am capable of assisting home school parents who feel less qualified covering core subjects at the secondary level.
