About Samuel

I am a retired teacher who also had a career in law. I began teaching Social Studies and English to junior and senior high school students, and enrolled in law school evening classes while teaching during the day. It was a tough, grueling three years, but I graduated, passed the bar, and began practice full-time while tutoring students on the side and teaching real estate courses part-time.

The money was rewarding, but the personal rewards were not the same as when working with students. The sense of personal fulfillment was lacking. So I took the advice of a client who was a lifelong teacher and principal who had begun teaching at a university, and joined him in his field of teacher education. I taught graduate and undergraduate courses in education and social studies methods, supervised student teachers, and helped prepare aspiring teachers to take the state competency examinations. Now I'm retired but still tutoring.

I spent 35+ years proofreading others' writing in junior/senior high schools, in the legal sphere, and in university courses. I'm experienced in correcting and improving students' grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure.

If you have a paper or writing assignment coming due and need help, try me out. Let's see if I can make suggestions to improve the quality and readability of your work and receive a better grade.

However, please do not expect miracles if you have been goofing off all semester or have waited until the last minute to get help, because there are limits to how much a last-minute tutor can do. Lack of preparation and planning on your part does not necessarily constitute an emergency on my part. Additionally, if you are seeking my help in proofreading an assignment or paper, please understand that I am not going to write or rewrite your assignment or paper for you. That's your job. I may make suggestions or corrections, but the implementation of those suggestions or corrections is up to you. Please review the Wyzant Academic Honesty Policy for further information.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have taught junior and senior high school Social Studies and English, and have taught college-level courses in Social Studies Education, including methods, student teaching, and testing. I also had a career in law.

American History

I am experienced in teaching American History to junior and senior high school students, and in teaching college students the methods of teaching Social Studies (including American History). I'm now retired except for some part-time online tutoring in Social Studies, English, and Law.

Bar Exam

Having survived the ordeal of the LSAT and the rigors of a competitive law school education, I passed the bar exam on my first attempt. I did take refresher courses prior to the exam, and those experiences undoubtedly helped prepare for both the multi-state and state-specific portions, and the essay and multiple-choice portions. My experience as a teacher is valuable in communicating theory and content.

I have multiple years of experience in teaching Social Studies, which includes government/civics/political science. My specific courses included American History, American Government, and the American Political System. My legal experience has given me experience in both the judicial and legislative spheres.

Praxis

I attained an earned Master's Degree in Social Studies Education, and have seven years of experience in the methods of teaching Social Studies. This experience included supervising student teachers, teaching methods and content area courses, and guiding students through their coursework and preparation for the state teacher examination. One of the tests our students took was Praxis.

Kind, helpful, and knowledgeable!

Samuel helped me to better understand the verbiage of the rubric for assignment that I'm working on. He answered all of my questions, and assisted me with questions that I had about doing research- such as what types of resources I should be looking for when exploring the internet for information about my topic. Thanks so much for your assistance, Samuel!
