Hi! My name is Nick. In July I earned my alternative certification for high school math from the American Board for Certification of Teacher Excellence. I earned a "Proficient" score of 291 on the ABCTE High School Math Exam (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I, Algebra II, Linear Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Statistics). I spent the last 18 months substitute teaching in middle school and high school (ages 11- 18). This included Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, and College Algebra classes. I enjoyed giving lectures and helping individual students with questions on the in-class work and/or homework assignments.
I also graduated summa cum laude from Park University in 2005. My achievements in college were due in to my professors' fun and relatable teaching styles. They always found a way to make a connection with me personally - through humor, a shared experience, or just a positive attitude. I came to highly value these individuals and have remained friends and colleagues with some of them through the years. I aim to use their teaching styles to set a student at ease and get them ready to take on a complex subject.
I love it when that moment of clarity hits for a student. What once was confusing - is now a world full of possibilities. I aim to teach the shortest path to a solution while making learning fun - for both the beginner and the advanced math student.
My approach to tutoring is to first determine what math standards a student already understands, then determine the standards where the student needs help. After helping the student practice the basic building blocks in the needed area, we can then move on to more complex problems. I will provide an explanation of each concept, followed by examples that I walk the student through, and conclude with problems the student solves on their own. I will then verify the answers and ensure that they achieve the standard before moving on.
I respond quickly to tutoring requests and questions. I look forward to our time together!
