I am an emerging music composer, performer, researcher (and interested in history, religion, and philosophy when not doing these!), and teacher. As a composer, I have received the Mile High Freedom Band 2021 Commission, a nomination for a 2020 award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1st prize for the Arcady Composition Competition, 2nd prize for the American Prize, and other accolades for my works.

I am an emerging music composer, performer, researcher (and interested in history, religion, and philosophy when not doing these!), and teacher. As a composer, I have received the Mile High Freedom Band 2021 Commission, a nomination for a 2020 award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1st prize for the Arcady Composition Competition, 2nd prize for the American Prize, and other accolades for my works.

As a teacher and tutor, I believe that the most successful students are ones that integrate who they are with what they learn, and synthesize it to make it their own. How do I do that? By seeking to understand the student’s personality, rather than teaching them a set script. I strive to cultivate a fun environment where you are free to ask questions and explore, and look beyond “the right answer” to any given question. In the end, I want students to be able to explain WHAT they are learning, WHEN their topic is relevant in history and today, WHERE the subject material was first devised, WHY they are learning it, WHO helped create the subject and with whom it is most affiliated today, and HOW they can apply it in their own life. I seek to educate every student individually and holistically, in order that they may make the material their own.

I have intentionally broadened my horizons to be able to integrate many subjects both musical and extramusical into my teaching style. I do not believe that subjects need to be so neatly separated, for one inevitably affects the other. Math, history, culture, psychology, philosophy, and… you name it! - it will relate to the music that interests you, and vice-versa!

Ian Evans Guthrie, an emerging composer, performer, and researcher, has received the Mile High Freedom Band 2021 Commission, a nomination for a 2020 award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, 1st prize for the Arcady Composition Competition, 2nd prize for the American Prize, and other accolades for his compositions. Many of his works have been performed publicly around the world by fEARnoMUSIC, the Northwest Symphony Orchestra, the Moore Philharmonic Orchestra, VIPA, the highSCORE Music Festival, the Atlantic Music Festival, the Charlotte New Music Festival, and others. He has served on various committees, including the Society of Composers, Inc., where he has served as the Region VI Student Representative before serving as Assistant Marketer and Marketer. His most recent works include Flight for Freedom for band, a fixed media track for dancer Ilana Goldman, tracks for various exhibitions at Venvi Art Gallery (Tallahassee, FL), and the score for the story ballet The Queen of Nori.

While having no degree in music history, I have written, presented, and taught on various musicological topics, including female composers throughout world history, Lili Boulanger (the first woman to win a Prix de Rome), Ruth Crawford Seeger (the first woman to win a Guggenheim), and non-Western influences in modern Western music. I have applied this research in some of my presentations and publications, including The Business With Composers (2015), Rhythm as Function (2019), and other sources. My interests began with lesser-known composers in Western music, especially Hugo Wolf and Gabriel Faure.

He is also an improviser, often combining hits in various genres with his compositional intuition, particularly with dancers and casual audiences. He began accompanying choirs and soloists at nine, and two years later made his first appearance on the Vancouver Seafarer’s Concert. Most recently, he has won and 2nd prize in the Great Composers Competition: Music of America and many other top prizes from GCC competitions, and before that won the 2013-14 Oregon MTNA young artist’s competition, the 2014 Brookings-Harbor Friends of Music scholarship, and 1st prize in the college-level OMTA scholarship competition in 2012. In September 2008, he performed first piano in Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals with Portland’s Columbia Symphony Orchestra.

Since I began my Master's degree at TCU, I have been teaching and tutoring Sight Singing and Ear Training. In Spring 2020, I had the largest two classes of Sight Singing and Ear Training ever at Florida State University, each class containing more than 20 students. Notwithstanding the large size and the COVID pandemic, I found creative ways to help students on an individual basis, and everyone who put forward a solid effort passed the class.

As a composer, I have absorbed many styles, including the popular songwriting ones. I began trying to write pop songs when I was 10, and have continued to utilize those methods throughout my career for the past 17 years. Additionally, I taught "The Art of Songwriting" at Florida State University in Spring 2018, a class devoted to basic musicality and pop songwriting techniques.

Really Knows What He’s Doing

I just took a lesson with Ian, and he was very knowledgeable about what he was talking about. I also love the fact that he actually plans out the lessons in advance, unlike some teachers who kinda just wing it. Really polite and knows how to say more complex things in a way that is relatable and easy to understand. 10/10 recommend going with him for songwriting.
