I came to teaching relatively late in life, having first spent more than 20 years representing my country overseas as a Foreign Service Officer, specializing in economic matters. I've been tutoring, both online and in-person, for about four years now, mostly in economics, math, statistics and Spanish. I've tutored clients from elementary through graduate school. For the last three years I've been teaching economics at an urban community college. I studied economics at the graduate level at Harvard and the London School of Economics.

My approach to tutoring is to help students learn what they need by working through problems together so that they can then solve them on their own. I think the best way to do that is to use the materials provided by their instructors, then supplement them as necessary to fill in gaps or provide reinforcement. I encourage my students to ask questions and move at their own pace. I also try to provide plenty of real-world context and practical steps to solve problems with minimal memorization.

I encourage students to work from what they know -- first principles -- and work toward solutions rather than memorize formulas that they will forget as soon as the test is over (if not before). I help them work through examples and then let them try to solve similar problems on their own, providing coaching as necessary. I also stress that there is almost always more than one way to solve a problem and help them find the methods they can most easily remember. My approach to math is practical rather than theoretical. Math is for solving problems.

Spanish

I'm not a native speaker but was qualified as having "full professional proficiency" in both spoken and written Spanish by the US State Department. I used Spanish on a daily basis in diplomatic assignments to Venezuela, Peru and Honduras and at the US Mission to the Organization of American States. I've written and delivered public speeches in Spanish and published articles in Spanish-language publications. I've also traveled extensively throughout Central America, Mexico and the Andean Region and was married to a Colombian for 20 years. I've been tutoring students and working adults in conversational Spanish for the last two years.

I've been teaching economics at a community college for the last three years to students with greatly varying levels of math preparation, including recently arrived refugees from war-torn countries and students from poorly performing urban high schools. I have also been tutoring math and statistics for the last four years to students ranging in age from third grade to senior citizens at an adult daycare center, and all ages in between. As an economist rather than a math major, I approach algebra as a practical tool for solving problems rather than a theoretical discipline.

Robert for AP micro economics

Robert was extremely helpful in working with my daughter to understand AP micro economics. She understands it much better after a couple of tutoring sessions with Robert and looks forward to working with him in the future.
