About Jessica

Hi, I'm a College Senior at UMKC majoring in English Language and Rhetoric, with a minor in Spanish. I'm in the sorority Alpha Sigma Alpha and am an intern for Cascade Media Group, as well as a professional dog walker through Wag! I have four years of experience tutoring Spanish and taught high school Spanish as a student aid for my mother when she was out sick.

I love tutoring kids and adults alike, and seeing their progress and increased self confidence is one of the things i love most in my experiences. Goals of mine are to become certified in TOEFL (teacher of English-foreign language) and work to increase communication abilities in people across the globe.

I have been speaking Spanish fluently for six years now, and have been speaking it since I was in eighth grade. I grew up with my mother, who is a Spanish teacher, and have always had opportunities to practice. I graded papers and created lesson plans and assignments for my mother and for my AP Spanish Teacher in high school. I studied abroad to Spain in 2011, and will be studying abroad in Argentina this summer of 2018 after I graduate to finish my Spanish minor. I worked in restaurant kitchens for three years and taught my hispanic coworkers English during my time there. I've also done social interpreting through volunteer opportunities with Misson Southside and in the Emergency Room, along with translating documents from English into Spanish as well.

I've tutored high school and college level Spanish for four years and have loved every bit of it! ¡Espero que nos conocemos prónto y te ayudaré mucho!

I am an English major in school, specifically in Language and Rhetoric, and have proofread and edited essays for high school, AP, and College levels of English. I am also effective at teaching reading strategies in children and those with special needs, such as High Functioning Down Syndrome and High functioning Autism. I have also taught elementary level reading and vocabulary in English as a second language to my Hispanic coworkers. I will be pursuing my Master's Degree in English Language and Literature, and am thinking of getting a Ph.D after I have settled into a permanent location.

I hope that we can grow to work very well together and am available most weekdays after 5:30pm, and all day on Fridays, weekend appointments must be planned ahead of time and may not be recurrent, as my sorority likes to plan mandatory things without much warning. I can drive to anywhere in KCMO, and to Johnson County KS, or meet with you on the UMKC campus. I can't wait to help you grow and succeed in your studies!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I am an English major at my university and have taken various literature, rhetoric, and grammar classes. Examples are American Literature 1 and 2, 18th Century Literature, Women and Rhetoric (writing intensive course), Structures of English (Linguistics). I took AP English my Junior and Senior years of high school so I am familiar with the AP procedures and paces. I am currently applying for Graduate school for a Master's of English.

Grammar

I have a most recent score of 33 on the English portion of the ACT exam. I completed Structures of English, a grammar and syntax heavy course which introduces linguistic study.

Literature

I studied British and American Literature throughout history, including 18th century specific lit. for British, and 1400's to 1850's specific lit. for American. I took AP Literature in High School. I have also studied various Shakespeare plays and sonnets, and the following plays in depth: Romeo & Juliet, Julius Caesar, Hamlet, A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Reading

I have a most recent score of 31 on the reading portion of the ACT exam. I have taken various literature classes and have five years of experience in advanced literary analysis.

Spanish

I was enrolled in upper level Spanish courses in College. I skipped all 100 and 200 level classes to go straight into 315 at UMKC. I tested into 531 at Kansas State University. I studied abroad to Spain in 2011, will be studying in Buenos Aires, Argentina this summer of 2018. I served as model AP Spanish student and tutor in high school, as well as a student aid to many teachers. I graded their tests and papers, wrote answer Keys and lesson plans, and even taught classes when they were out sick. Spanish has always been second nature to me and I can't wait to help students develop an appreciation for the language and the culture.

Vocabulary

I received an English score of 33 on the ACT. I am good with identifying different rhetorical devices and syntactic categories. I have taken various Rhetoric and Linguistics courses in college. I enjoy coming up with a combination of mnemonic devices and flashcards to help kids study vocabulary and definitions
