About Ashna

My name is Ashna. I am 26 years old. I have taught in public schools for five years. I love to teach! I enjoy helping students achieve their goals because I know everyone has potential to learn.

I am familiar with the implementation of numerous instructional strategies. I understand that every student learns in a different way, so I try my best to tailor my instruction to meet their needs.

I have taught under the Common Core State Standards for 4 years and have a deep understanding of its purpose and accurate implementation.

I speak two languages. Kurdish and English. I taught abroad at Cambridge International Schools-Kurdistan teaching native students English, reading, writing, and math.

I am easy to work with and can schedule times that work best for you. Contact me and together we can help you accomplish your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have 3 years of experience using Common Core at my school and in my classroom. I have attended multiple meetings/training through my school district to help me get a deeper understand for what Common Core asks of students and teachers.

Handwriting

The ability to write well comes with lots of practice, but also the correct formation of letters and properly holding a pencil. As a kindergarten teacher, I spent a lot of time teaching my kiddos how to write well by using lined paper, holding their hands to forming letters with them and teaching them different tricks to help them remember how to write letters properly. I used an activity to help students sort each letter into one of three categories. Some letters were tall like (k,l, h) some letters were short like (n, m, o, e) and some letters had tails like (g, j, y).

Phonics

As a kindergarten teacher my most important role was to get students to understand the rules and exceptions that went into reading. I spent all my reading time teaching students about letter sounds, long vowels, short vowels, blends, word families, ending sounds etc. I used Animated Literacy which involved story telling, coloring, highlighting, singing and movement to help my students become strong readers.

Study Skills

Supported by my studies in college and first hand work with students, I have a deep understanding for the 7 styles of learning. Each person is born with abilities specific to them. Their learning style is one example of that. Some students learn best through discussion. Some students learn better by watching videos or view pictures. Other students need to write things down to help store it in their memory.

I believe that everyone big or small have the potential to grow academically, all they need is to figure out how they learn best and create a plan to help them maximize their study time.
