About Maximilian

I'm a 2014 graduate of the University of Missouri - Columbia. I have a bachelors degree in Strategic Communication, with an emphasis in Advertising/Copywriting, from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. The journalism school at Mizzou is one of the oldest in the world and frequently appears in the top 3 rankings of Journalism schools worldwide, many years at number 1. In my four years in the program I studied grammar, news writing and reporting, and multimedia journalism before being accepted into my specific program within the School of Journalism, Strategic Communication, which encompasses both Public Relations and Advertising; my specific emphasis was copywriting for advertisements.

I have over 2 years of experience tutoring elementary, high school, and college level students. I have tutored a large variety of topics, such as writing, history, advertising, and reading, but most of my experience lies in preparing students for their ACT or SAT exams.

I have always excelled on exams such as the SAT, PSAT, ACT, etc. On my SAT, I scored, out of the then-current 2400, a 2280. On my ACT, my composite was a 35. I know a great deal about test preparation and strategies and would be able to share a wide variety of experiences and information with students based on their individual strengths and potential weaknesses.

As a recent college graduate, I understand the grading systems, teachers' expectations and style of teaching at the high school and college levels of education. I also have a very open schedule and am familiar with online instruction, so I'm happy to teach through whatever medium suits students best.

Because of a diverse range of experience, my familiarity with the expectations of several levels of education, and my personal success and experience with the major standardized tests, I know that I have a great deal to offer students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I received a 36 on my ACT English section, and because of this score I was able to to receive an academic full ride to the University of Missouri. I was also given direct admittance to the School of Journalism, due in great part to this score.

ACT Reading

I received a 36 on the Reading section of the ACT; this score contributed to both a 35 composite and a full ride at the University of Missouri, from which I graduated in 2014 with a degree in Strategic Communication.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have had several elementary-age students, including a rising 6th grader that I tutored in reading, writing, elementary math, and general study skills. Outside of WyzAnt, I tutored a 10-year-old homeschooled student (who turned 11 during our time working together) who was preparing to enter the sixth grade. We worked together from October 2015 to August of 2016.

European History

My qualifications in European History stem from my German double major at the University of Missouri; in addition to language, I fulfilled many of the credit requirements with European history classes, ranging from the medieval age to the formation of the European Union.

Football

From 2006-2010, I played strong safety for Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Missouri. We won state championships in the 6A division in 2007 and again in 2010. I remain a very passionate football fan to this day; I follow the University of Missouri Tigers, the New Orleans Saints, and the Kansas City Chiefs and am very familiar with the complexities of the sport (formations, play books, defensive schemes, etc.) and the skills required to play it (equipment, tackling fundamentals, physical conditioning, safety, etc.).

Grammar

I have a degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri, which has been ranked as the #1 Journalism School in the country four out of the last six years by US News and World Report. I had extensive study in grammar while earning my degree and graduated in May of 2014; besides tutoring, I also work writing copy for advertisements

Marketing

I received a bachelors degree in Advertising/Copywriting from the University of Missouri School of Journalism in May 2014. I was required to take several marketing classes to earn this degree, and, naturally, the two subjects relate closely to one another.

Reading

Due to my education at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, I not only read a great deal, I did just as much writing; I believe that writing while striving for mass readability further strengthened my reading skills. Finally, I received perfect scores on the Reading sections on both the ACT and SAT: a 36 and 800, respectively.

SAT Reading

In 2009, I took the SAT and scored a perfect 800 on the Critical Reading section. My overall SAT score and my score on the Reading section in particular was a large part of my acceptance to the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, one of the highest rated in the world, on a full academic scholarship. I graduated from college in 2014. I have 2 years of experience tutoring in a variety of subjects, including test prep for the ACT, SAT, PSAT and GED exams.

SAT Writing

In 2009, I took the SAT and scored a 790 out of 800 on the Writing section. My SAT composite score was a 2280 out of the then-current 2400. I have over 2 years of experience tutoring, with the majority of that time in both SAT and ACT preparation.

Vocabulary

My vocabulary has grown and remained expansive not only throughout my time at the University of Missouri School of Journalism, where many of my assignments and exams focused on reading and/or writing, but also from my love of reading and 2+ years of tutoring experience, specifically the SAT Reading section, which is notorious for testing students on difficult vocabulary words.

Writing

My experience in advanced academic writing comes from both my time at the University of Missouri School of Journalism and my work in freelance advertising, which I perform in addition to private tutoring. I've written ad copy for several local businesses, a political group, and a veteran's hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
