Hello and Guten Tag! My name is Whitney and I am a fluent German speaker and a native English speaker. I have over 20 years tutoring experience and I would love to help you to improve your German or English speaking and writing skills. I have two Bachelor's degrees - one in German and one in Journalism. I lived and worked in Germany and Austria for two and a half years and my family and I go back to both countries regularly. I enjoy tutoring German because it is always exciting to help a language "click" with a student. Languages are like puzzles and once a student figures out the patterns of a language it becomes a fun game. I would love to help you solve the puzzle!

I originally taught German at two well-known language schools for a total 4 years, then branched out on my own and have been tutoring German independently for the last 10 years. I have also lived and worked in Germany and Austria, so I can help with cultural questions, as needed.

My teaching style involves helping the student to improve both their writing and speaking skills. This involves a combination slogging through the grammar, but also helping the students with their conversational style. Both are important, especially if the student is interested in traveling, living or working in a German-speaking country. I do not feed my students answers, but make them work to find the answers themselves through gentle suggestion if they are stuck. Because I am not a native speaker, I feel I have an advantage because I can explain German to others from an outsider's perspective, which many have found helpful.

Feedback from students is very important to me, as I am constantly trying to improve my technique and learn, just as the students are. So please let me know when I am doing something well or need to improve.

I have a 5-hour cancellation policy that I strictly enforce, but will happily set up make-up lessons.
