About Jennifer

My main goal is to show every student how to better enable themselves in learning. I believe there is not one way to learn - we all have our own way to comprehend. Some students just need the confidence to believe in their way of learning. Once they learn how they understand something they tend to excel in that area. As a teacher, I first learn how they understand then teach them to use whatever tools needed to strengthen learning skills. For students with learning struggles I like to watch as they develop these skills and use them to learn concepts.
While working with students I will revisit concepts as needed to develop skills in areas not previously understood to build skills to levels needed. Many times a review or new approach is what a student needs to comprehend a subject. As students gain confidence in what they have learned then new concepts are not as intimidating. Each new discovery a student makes encourages me as an educator and empowers another student to succeed.

I have worked with numerous ESL students and enjoy developing the relationship between native language and English. I received my ESOL endorsement on my Bachelor's degree in 2007 and have taught ESOL students in various formats and levels. In reading, Vocabulary and writing the challenge is meaning and usage of the language. As students develop oral skills they are able to relate words and meaning together in all areas and develop more language understanding and growth. In the past two years, I have been working as an online teacher for ESL learners in other countries and have love reaching across miles to teach language and have had many students both children and adults. I am proud of the achievements they have made and make daily in learning and using English as a whole language.

I enjoy using manipulatives in math. Tools in math are needed and are intricate in learning some concepts- use the tool correctly and the concept is learned. In early math tools are isolators, in later math they are regulators. Each student is capable of learning using tools and can excel when they learn the concept behind each one.

Phonics are the basis of reading. learning the sounds and patterns of words develops the understanding of reading. if you don't know what you're looking at you cannot read it. As a former Kindergarten and as a certified VPK/preschool teacher I have excellent phonics understanding and teaching skills in word decoding, understanding and word use. Word and sound knowledge with grammar understanding is fundamental in learning to read and comprehending.

I am an advocate that learning can be enjoyable and if you can get the concept it makes it more fun! I will show students how they learn and how to help themselves become better learners in new concepts as well as learned ones. Building skills is building strengths; building strengths is building confidence and building confidence is making better learners. All students have the capability to learn and improve- together we can build the bridge between knowledge and skill.

Watching as each child progresses and learns is very humbling, rewarding and encouraging. I have taught ESL and learning challenged students most of my career and truly enjoy watching students learn and develop a new skill. With Elementary, Voluntary Pre-K and Kindergarten background I am trained in phonemic awareness and phonics as well as all other forms of language introduction. I am certified and have my degree in Early childhood Education, Emergent Literacy, Exceptional Student Education and ESL/TESOL instruction. I believe in every students ability and try to encourage their success through learning. Everyone can succeed!
