About Kirk

I am a semi-retired man in my mid sixties. After pursuing many different fields of work in my lifetime, in 2006, I decided to return to college and complete a bachelors degree. I had studied and practiced art most of my life, so it made sense for me to complete my bachelors degree in art. My advisor at the time suggested to me to pursue a minor in psychology. This is what I did. After getting that education I worked for a year in Omaha, Nebraska and then applied for graduate school at Emporia State University. I had had some exposure to art therapy and at that point I decided to pursue that field of study.

I am now in the final stages of getting my masters degree from ESU in art therapy. ESU is the first university in the nation to offer a masters degree in art therapy. I have had many internships since I have been a student at ESU. I have worked with the developmentally disabled. I have worked within the Emporia School District working with young people that had some degree of disability and also those with some behavioral problems. I enjoyed with this population and found in very rewarding.

My approach to teaching is in alignment with the psychologist Carl Rogers. I believe in a very patient and personal approach to teaching and learning. I look at each learner as an individual with their own personal approach to learning. All of us have our own rate and speed of learning. I take this into consideration when working with others.
