My name is Meagan and I've recently moved back to Kansas City from Osaka, Japan with my family. In Japan, I taught a wide range of EFL university level classes using skills-based (grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking, TOEFL preparation, academic sources citation usage) and content-based instruction. I had all levels of students. Prior to living in Japan for five years, I taught ESL at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg in the Intensive English Program. I also have experience teaching composition/writing at the University of Central Missouri and the Metropolitan Community Colleges. I have a Master's degree in TESL, speak some Japanese and Spanish, and am well-equipped to teach students in an English-only environment even if they have lower skill levels. If you plan to be a regular student, I might request that you buy a specific textbook to work with if you'd like regular homework assignments. I have traveled to many difference countries including Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Czech Republic, England, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Austria, Italy, Jamaica, Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan, China, Aruba, and Hong Kong. In my travels I've acquired cultural knowledge and an understanding about various cultures, so it would be very difficult to surprise me. I am open, accepting, and welcoming of cultural differences and varying religious beliefs. I also have a toddler who speaks English and a little Japanese, so I'm open to tutoring sessions at unusual places like parks if students would like to bring or involve their children in the tutoring experience or have play-based English learning for their children. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
