About Jessica

I am a graduate of Princeton University ('11) and Rice University ('13). At Princeton, I majored in classics, specializing in both Latin and ancient Greek. I wrote a thesis analyzing the first four books of Virgil's Aeneid and connecting them to a modern ballet set to Henry Purcell's "Dido and Aeneas." I also received a certificate in music performance at Princeton, performing two flute concertos with the university's orchestra, earning fellowships at several prestigious summer festivals, and touring Europe. At Rice, I received a master of music degree in flute performance, and am now a professional flautist. I hold the position of principal flute in the Wichita Symphony, and I also play with the Kansas City Symphony as a substitute. I have been providing private flute lesson for almost ten years to students of all levels. I can translate Latin and Ancient Greek fluently, and speak French, having lived in Montreal as a child. I studied Mandarin Chinese for a year at Rice, and speak a little bit of Italian. I earned perfect scores on the reading and writing sections of the SATs, and I love grammar, an obsession I attribute to my early education in Latin. I enjoy teaching driven students who seek to better themselves, whether the end goal is a coveted spot at a top university, grade improvement, or enjoyment of a subject and broadening of the mind. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Flute

I have a Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from Rice University's Shepherd School of Music. I am the Principal Flutist of the Wichita Symphony and a substitute flutist with the Kansas City Symphony. This past summer I placed 3rd in the National Flute Association Young Artist Competition. At 18, I was a Presidential Scholar in the Arts, performed at the Kennedy Center, and was one of the youngest people ever to obtain a flute fellowship to the Tanglewood Music Center. I performed two flute concertos while an undergraduate at Princeton University, where I received a certificate in Music Performance. I have been teaching private flute lessons to people of various ages and levels for almost ten years.

Greek

I majored in Classics at Princeton University and graduated cum laude. For this degree, I was required to become an expert in Ancient Greek as well as Latin. I have translated the Iliad, parts of the New Testament, Plato's Symposium and Apology, Longus' Daphnis and Chloe, and much more. I have knowledge of Attic, Homeric, and koine Greek.
