I am a pleasant, middle-aged man, who has taught and/or worked with children for many years after graduating from college. I started in the inner city of Chicago, and have worked as a substitute in the Kansas City, Missouri School District. I also was employed as a Math Interventionist with the Frontier School of Innovation from January - June, 2012. I just finished teaching an exciting year of 4th Grade in the Hickman Mills School District, and am currently pursuing other educational opportunities. I graduated in December, 2011, with my Master of Elementary Education from Rockhurst University. I graduated in the top ten in my high school class, and then went to Northwestern University on the Evans Scholarship, a needs-based scholarship that also had to be maintained with a C average. Although starting in a pre-med track, taking all of the calculus and chemistry courses, I finished with a bachelor's in Sociology.
I love working with children of all backgrounds, hoping to see them believe in themselves and succeed in all they do. I love to learn and love to instill that same love in children. My recent coursework at Rockhurst has also equipped me with the tools I need to help with reading, science, math and social studies. I hope I can be of excellent service to any student with the desire to discipline themselves to learn and reach their full potential. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I enjoy teaching elementary mathematics, including algebra 1. I like to use manipulatives and activities to enhance enjoyment, comprehension and retention of mathematics skills. I have been employed as a Math Interventionist at a Kansas City charter school in 2012, working with students in grades 6-8. I also just finished teaching 4th grade in south Kansas City during the 2012-2013 academic year. In the summer of 2013, I passed the Middle School Mathematics Praxis exam.
I have taken survey classes of both the Old and New Testament within my church and at Ministry training school in Pensacola, Florida, in the fall of 2000. While also at this school, I took an exegesis course and wrote an exegesis on 1 John 4:7-12, receiving an "A" mark on the paper/project. I taught the 10-12 year-old boys in my church in our midweek King's Kids Bible program for one year, before working with the youth as a counselor/assistant to the youth pastor.
I have about 20+ years of experience working with children, both in a school academic setting, and within my church spiritual setting. I began working with children of diverse cultures on the near West side of Chicago. I taught P.E. and religion classes to children in grades Kindergarten through eighth grade, from Mexican, African-American, Filipino and European descent. I worked in the Catholic school system for four years before I moved on to a corporate job.
While living in Kansas City, I have returned to education, entering Rockhurst University's Master of Education program in Elementary education. I have been substituting for the past four years at a primarily Hispanic school in the Kansas City Missouri School District. I have taught all grade levels and had my own primary (1st-2nd grade level) reading class in my second year there. I have also taught 7th and 8th grade social studies and language arts on a long-term basis. Combining what I have learned in Rockhurst's Master program with practice in the classroom has made me an effective phonics, reading, vocabulary and math teacher. I am comfortable with all subjects in grades K-6th, including computer and music. I look forward to assisting you in your academic success.

I have worked with the Kansas City Public Schools' reading program, Success For All, at all levels, primary through middle school (grades 1-8), and taught a primary reading group for a year, which included an intensive phonics component. Although phonics is just one part of a comprehensive reading program, I am aware of its importance and have the tools and skills available to be able to tutor phonics effectively.

As a detail-oriented teacher, I look for the fine details in the writing of my students, from punctuation and grammar to sentence structure and style. I was asked permission by my education program at Rockhurst University to use the written portion of my teaching portfolio as a model to show other students how to write their portfolio essays. As the husband of an author, I often proofread the edits of my wife's writing. I can help proofread your writing so that it reads well.
I have taught reading skills to students from elementary to middle school age, including vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and fluency strategies. Having a love for reading myself, I have a passion to see others develop their own love for reading by providing them with the necessary skills and strategies to accomplish their goals.
I have studied Spanish for a total of 4 years in the classroom (2 in high school and 2 in my undergraduate studies) and took an intermediate summer intensive course before using it professionally in Chicago as an educator and youth advocate. I continued to use my Spanish conversationally through the years as an educator, speaking with students, parents, and administrators, and as a traveler to Mexico and Central America. I can speak, read, and write the language at an instructional level to help build a strong foundation for your Spanish speaking skills.
As a certified elementary teacher and graduate of a Master's degree in Education, I have to be proficient in spelling. Before Microsoft Word, I was an avid speller, winning many spelling bees in school. Spelling is an important skill that I believe goes "hand in glove" with reading, writing, and grammar. Being also detailed in nature, I want to make sure that all of my words are spelled correctly. If you need help with spelling, I can provide you with special tips to help you remember the major rules of spelling in the English language.
I have an international TESOL certificate, and am knowledgeable in providing the best assistance in all of the TOEFL exam. I am also a certified elementary teacher, with excellent qualifications and experience in reading, grammar, and writing skills. My graduate program professors asked to use my written teaching portfolio as a model for other students. I have traveled and lived abroad, and so I know the challenges of learning a second language. I have been told that I am the most patient man in the classroom. With all of the above, I hope I can provide you with necessary skills you need to pass your TOEFL exam.
I am a certified elementary teacher who has experience teaching the basic skills of spelling, grammar, vocabulary and writing.
