About Claudia

After graduation from college, I enrolled in Montessori training. After completing my training, I taught 5 years in a private Montessori ungraded primary school. While my children were young I worked at various part time jobs. As a teacher in a recreation center in Richardson, TX, I designed and taught several different preschool classes. As my children entered elementary school, I was a substitute teacher. While substituting I had one school in which I did a long term assignment. Through this process, I began tutoring a couple of students during the summer to help them keep up. Tutoring continued for several years for one of the students. I continued substituting until my children were older. I also taught 2 different years in a preschool class of 3-5 year olds. For one year I was a Director of a child care facility in the inner city that serviced mainly refugees. Most recently I taught 2nd grade in the KCMO Public schools. While teaching in this typically Hispanic school I took a graduate class (SIOP) through UMKC on teaching my ESL students. With the different experiences I have, I am familiar with many different reading and math curriculum and can easily learn new ones. I believe phonics are an important beginning to reading. My Montessori experience helps me in making or acquiring hands-on materials to help with learning.
As a tutor, I expect the student to work hard but I enjoy celebrating each success with them. I find that there are learning games to use as rewards for their hard work. Taking an interest in my students, I will seek out the best method for teaching each individual student. With enthusiasm and joy I enjoy teaching students to do their best and be successful learners.
As a vibrant and joyful person, I will bring an excitement for learning. I believe each person can learn with the appropriate environment, tools, and experiences. Each accomplishment should be celebrated. I enjoy a challenge and will work hard to ensure success for each student.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught 5 years in a private Montessori ungraded primary school. I was preschool teacher for many years. As a teacher in a rec center I designed and taught several different classes. I was a substitute teacher for 10 years. Most recently I taught 2nd grade in the KCMO Public schools. I was the K-2 lead math teacher and served on the leadership team. I have used many different reading and math curriculums in my career and can easily learn new ones. I believe phonics are a important beginning to reading. My Montessori experience helps me in making or acquiring hands-on materials to help with learning. I taught in a hispanic school recently and took a graduate class (SIOP) through UMKC on teaching ESL students. With enthusiasm and joy I enjoy teaching students to do their best and be successful learners.

ESL/ESOL

I have taken a graduate class (SIOP) through UMKC to learn better teaching methods for ESL students. I taught 3 years in a largely Hispanic school.

Phonics

As an early childhood major I have taught phonics to various ages. I believe phonics a vital instrument in learning to read.

Study Skills

I have experience teaching with all ages and believe I could help someone learn new concepts and gain the confidence they need to become successful learners.
