About David

I have been a secondary school science, mathematics and photography teacher for over forty years. I recently had the opportunity to teach a digital photography class at Missouri Southern State University. There I discovered that I really enjoyed teaching on the university level, because I was able to delve more deeply into the subject matter than I could in the high school classroom. Now that I have retired from teaching, I am looking forward to a career as a tutor for high school as well as university students, sharing my experience and knowledge in a new way.

I have always had a strong passion for physics as well. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Physics from Western Illinois University. From there I joined the Marine Corps, received the rank of Captain and traveled overseas where I continued to pursue my interest in photography. Upon my return to the United States, I attended the Illinois Institute of Technology Institute of Design Bauhaus where I received my Master of Science in photography. While I was working on my graduate degree, I accepted several freelance film and photography assignments in the Chicago area, including a film for the Wurlitzer Organ Company.

My mission is to take the mystery out of the mechanics of photography, physics and algebra and to encourage my students to integrate these skills into their daily lives in such a way as to enhance their career opportunities as well as bring new clarity to everyday living.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

With many years of experience teaching Algebra in secondary schools here in the United States and abroad, I have the tools to help simplify the process of learning Algebra I. When I tutored students in Wuerzburg, Germany, I used my knowledge of graphing calculators to show them how to speed up the problem-solving process once each student had mastered the basics.

If you are having trouble in this subject, I look forward to assisting you. If you live near Joplin, Missouri, I will be happy to come to your home or to a place of your choice. I can also assist you online. I am offering my first tutoring session at 50% off the regular price.

I look forward to making your math experience interesting and fun.

Photography

From my years of teaching photography to a broad spectrum of students – elementary school to senior citizens - combined with my professional experience in the field, I have developed a series of lessons that make learning photography simple and fun. In just a few tutorials, a student has the potential to go from snapshot photographer to taking professional-looking pictures. You can master the same skills in composition and Photoshop that I recently taught students at Missouri Southern State University.
Taking a photograph can be likened to an artist standing before an easel with his brush poised and ready or a soprano on stage at the Metropolitan ready to sing a glorious aria. It is more than just technique. It is a combination of heart, mind and vision coming to life in front of the easel, the audience or the camera’s lens. My mission is to help you see and think more deeply about what you photograph and to better integrate your three-dimensional world into the two-dimensional photograph with logic as well as an artist’s eye.
I want you to have this opportunity. I am offering you the first tutorial on where to place the center of interest and fundamental basic camera operations at a special introductory discount of 50% off my regular fee.
Three of the pictures in my photo gallery were taken by some of my former students: the Girl in the Tree – Kendra; Milk & Cookies – Edie; the Flag – Thomas. Just click on the picture icon to enlarge them. I took the photo of a group of my students learning how to use lines to improve composition during a weekend seminar I participated in last spring. After the 6-hour session, the 5th graders were well on their way to taking great pictures themselves.
I also have many years of teaching experience in both physics and mathematics. If you want to improve your photographic, physics or algebra skills, I can help you. You are never too young to be a great photographer. I look forward to helping you to achieve that goal.

Physics

My mission is to take the mystery out of the mechanics of physics by showing the students I tutor how to use the technique of linearization in their lab work and to encourage them to integrate physics concepts into their daily lives in such a way as to enhance their career opportunities in the future as well as bring new clarity to everyday living.

I am offering my first tutoring session on how to develop and understand Newton’s Law of Motion using linearization and how this concept can be applied to the study of other physics formulas. This first lesson will be 50% off the regular price. With this knowledge you will be able to produce professional-looking laboratory reports that will serve you well in the future.

I look forward to helping you in any capacity that is needed.

Prealgebra

During my many years of experience teaching Algebra I, I discovered what basic fundamentals many of my students were missing when they came to my class. As an after-school math tutor in Wuerzburg, Germany I used repetition drills as well as other learning tools to show them how to add and subtract fractions with ease.

If you are having trouble in this subject, I look forward to assisting you. If you live near Joplin, Missouri, I will be happy to come to your home or to a place of your choice. If not, I can assist you online with the virtual whiteboard. I am offering my first tutoring session at 50% off the regular price.

I look forward to making Pre-Algebra both interesting and fun.
