Beginning in 2002, I started my teaching career in Second Grade. I loved those kids, but, unfortunately, had to relocate and search for a new position.

I became a Title 1 reading teacher where I pulled students in small groups working on specific skills at individualized levels. I continued this position for three years before becoming a fourth grade teacher.

After finishing my first year in fourth grade, my family was relocated again. From that point, I have enjoyed every day with my fifth graders putting me at year 19 all together. Our diverse population and my constant support and cheerleading lead my students to excel while with me.

We laugh. We get silly. We become family. We strive to be our best daily.

I love working with small groups, so we have the opportunity to know each other. Through strong relationships, we build trust and find ways to thrive. I can’t wait to meet my new friends at spread my love of learning.

Being a Title 1 reading teacher, I put in many graduate level hours to become more knowledgeable and prepared for each day. I am six hours short of being a reading specialist.

Reading and Writing fit together so well. I create lessons to be seamless going from one skill to another to create something students are proud of.

Handwriting is becoming an art form. However, without neat, precise work, progressing becomes even more difficult. I don’t just teach the skills for proper handwriting; I give it value which students learn to appreciate.

Spelling is such an important part of reading. Phonics must be learned in order for anyone to become a good speller. Spelling practice must come from reading in order to make the connections.

Phonics is the basics of reading, and, unfortunately, is getting lost in whole brain teaching. The lack of phonics is causing both reading and writing delays. To close that gap, I break large or challenging words apart into small pieces we can use. This strategy has built confidence in numerous students.
