Bio

My name is Sr. Maria and I am a hermit. My previous name was Diana, so most of my reviews use that name. Hermits spend most of their days in prayer, but they need to support themselves, and I support myself through tutoring.

I have 6 years experience teaching high school mathematics - algebra 1, algebra 2 and geometry - in a classroom setting and held certification to teach mathematics in the State of Virginia from 2007 to 2012. I also have 2 years experience teaching high school chemistry....

I have 6 years experience teaching high school mathematics - algebra 1, algebra 2 and geometry - in a classroom setting and held certification to teach mathematics in the State of Virginia from 2007 to 2012. I also have 2 years experience teaching high school chemistry. I have worked as a private tutor for the past 6 years, tutoring homeschooling and regular-schooled students from grade school through high school mathematics (pre-algebra to precalculus), chemistry, and test prep (PSAT, SAT, ACT, CLT, college entrance exams, PARCC, and Regents).

I graduated from MIT with a bachelor's degree in civil engineering and also worked 3 years as a civil engineer (inspecting bridges, designing databases, and doing some AutoCAD design work).

Subjects

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have three years experience teaching algebra 1 in a classroom setting. I have also tutored many students in pre-algebra, algebra 1, algebra 2, and SAT prep (which involves a good deal of algebra) over the past six years. Finally, I reviewed and retaught many algebra 1 skills with my geometry students during the five years that I taught geometry.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I taught algebra 2 in a classroom for one year and have tutored algebra 2 (and precalculus which uses much of the same knowledge and skills) for the past five years. I also taught algebra 1, the prerequisite for algebra 2, for three years and have been tutoring in it for the past six years. I have a good ability to explain the algebra 2 subject matter to students.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I taught high school chemistry for 2 years, which included regular and honors chemistry and a chemistry 2 course for seniors. I also have been tutoring in chemistry for five years. My educational background is in civil and environmental engineering which included a good number of chemistry courses in college. I do not tutor AP chemistry at this time.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have five years experience teaching high school geometry. I also taught an algebra 2 class which had an integrated geometry curriculum component. I have tutored many students in geometry over the past six years and have also tutored many students in SAT and ACT prep both of which include geometry.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have six years experience in home schooling and tutoring in pre-algebra. Also, since the skills taught in pre-algebra are then used in all later math courses, the six years I have spent teaching algebra 1 & 2 and geometry in a classroom and the five years I have spent tutoring those subjects have also contributed to my knowledge and ability to explain the concepts of pre-algebra.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have tutored precalculus for the past four years. Much of the material in precalculus is also covered (but in less depth) in algebra 2 - and I have tutored a good number of students in algebra 2 over the past five years. I seem to have a good ability to explain harder concepts in a way that makes sense and that makes it seem easy (at least that is what I have been told).
SAT Math

SAT Math

I have tutored many students in math SAT prep (and math PSAT prep) over the past six years. So at this point, I am very familiar with the questions and the types of problems students have. I also have 6 years of experience teaching algebra 1, algebra 2 and geometry - 3 of the main subject areas on the SAT math test - and have been tutoring in algebra 1 and 2, geometry, and other material that is on the SAT math test for the past six years.

I have also tutored in algebra 1 & 2, geometry, pre-calculus, and SAT math prep for the past six years all of which gives me more knowledge and experience to share with my students.

Excellent tutor who relates well to Middle Schooler

Diana has worked four sessions with my 8th grader utilizing the Life of Fred textbook series. He has been super pleased with the quality of instruction, clarity of explanations, and pace. He asked to give her 5 stars. He liked her so much he was bragging to his 6th grade brother about how great his tutor is and now his little brother has requested her. HIGHLY recommend.

Successful Online Session

1st online tutoring session was a success, thank you Diana. Amazing that this can be down on-line! We will try for another one soon. I was a slightly concerned that something would go right but it was flawless!

I highly recommend Diana

Diana has tutored my kids in pre-algebra and honors geometry for nearly a year. She is a great tutor, very patient and exceptionally knowledgeable. She really cares about her students success. Diana is an exceptional tutor, she is always prepared and on time. She is very accommodating when it comes to rescheduling. She has no problem bringing extra worksheets and preparing lessons for the material that has not yet been taught in school. The girls’ grades improved tremendously and as a result, they gained confidence. They have both progressed to the next level of their respective advanced math courses. I highly recommend Diana as a tutor.

Phenomenal

Diane is an excellent teacher, who is able to take complex material and break it down for an easy understanding. She is extremely reliable, gets back to you right away, and has gone out of her way in being flexible to accommodate schedules and last minute help that was needed. I highly endorse Diana. She is a phenomenal teacher.

Diana R is a professional wonder

Diana has helped my Granddaughter Kristen thru some very difficult times with her schooling and she is an example of kindness and professionalism in her approach to teaching. We are going to miss her terribly but wish her all the best !

Excellent Tutor!

Diana helped my daughter prepare for the new SAT math section. She was very good at breaking everything down so my daughter had a better understanding of how to approach these problems. This resulted in higher scoring after 44 lessons (1 1/2 hours each). She was very professional, always on time, patient and always well prepared. She also provided analysis of which problems my daughter faired better on as opposed to those which she needed more help on, and subsequently tailored the lessons toward what she needed to work on. Excellent tutor.

Very well prepared, patient and thorough.

Diana is excellent! She requests my son's material prior to our session so she is fully prepared to explain it and work with him. We are very pleased and would recommend her!

Extremely Helpful & Kind

After only one lesson with my daughter Diana was able to identify where she needed extra attention. She took the time out after the lesson to send links for more problems on the topic she would be testing in. Very helpful-very personable.
