About Kevin

Thank you for stopping by to read my profile!! Learning a new language can be fun, but also a challenge. I like to make it fun, simple, and practical. Hopefully, after reading a little about me you will find that I am able to help you. I graduated from the University of Sagrado Corazon in San Juan, Puerto Rico with a B.A. in Secondary Spanish Education. My education is designed to teach the heritage speaker, so I have a very intricate working knowledge of the language. Furthermore, in San Juan, my day-to-day living for seven years was in Spanish. This means that I am able to teach "real world" Spanish by pointing out regional and cultural differences in the spoken language that go beyond the general text book lessons.

Since I completed my degree completely immersed in the language, my accent is near-native. This means that I offer a very authentic learning experience. But this also means that I understand the struggle and confusion that come with learning a second language. I know the common pronunciation mistakes that we make as native English speakers and how to correct them. I also know the things that most often confuse us when conjugating verbs--the subjunctive, for example or confusing the English gerund when we should use the infinitive in Spanish. I offer a free first class. This allows you to evaluate me and for me to evaluate your level of Spanish and your goals for learning. After that, we will discuss a plan of action and set attainable goals. Most importantly, your personal goals are very important to me. I will work to make sure you reach them by doing all in my power. I am very patient, perceptive and persistent.

I am qualified on many levels of Spanish. For High School Spanish Spanish I, II, III I am proficient in all verb tenses and vocabulary. If you are in A.P. Spanish, then I am able to help with preparation for A.P. Exam including reading comprehension and writing which can be challenging for many. If you are a Heritage Speaker, I know that often syntax rules and accents can be problematic. We can review the rules so that you never forget.

At the university level, I am familiar with beginner, intermediate, as well as advanced Spanish. For beginners it is sometimes a little confusing at first. I am patient and help you to better understand Los Saludos Ser vs Estar Presente y pretérito. As you progress to the intermediate level you will run into El subjuntivo gustar and verbs like gustar Direct and Indirect objects The personal "a" Los tiempos perfectos, and finally at the advanced level reading comprehension as you study Los ensayos (Essays) Los cuentos (Short Stories) El Poesía (Poetry) Las obras de teatro Las novelas (Novels) La Composición (Composition) can be difficult and maybe you would like to bounce what you understand off someone else or maybe you need to further develop or understand a character.

Finally, I work also with small church groups teaching Spanish for the Ministry, Witnessing and Mission Trips. This is an eight week course for churches who would like to equip missionaries for travel abroad to Spanish speaking countries to deliver the Gospel. The course is held at your church. Because the class is very speaking intensive I only work with groups no fewer than three and no larger than ten participants, however, we can split larger mission teams into smaller groups. This allows for better practice time. Special terms and rates apply. If you are interested please contact me for the details.

Please make sure you look at my rate policy and ask any questions that you may have. I can be very flexible on time and location including classes on line. Once again thank you for stopping by. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I teach a Bible Study to both English and Spanish speaking congregations that examines the historical evidence of Jesus, his purpose, life, work, resurrection and why He uniquely fulfills the role of Messiah.

The class lasts for eight weeks and examines the writings of the Bible itself and those of several scholars on both sides of the debate by looking at historical data. By the end of the class, the student will be able to explain the historical evidence for Jesus. I can also do a one day workshop at your choice of location.

If you email me I will send a syllabus.

As a Graduate of Sacred Heart University, I took as a minor the life of Christ. I have also completed certification in Biblical Studies and extensive research on Jesus from the historical perspective. I hold to traditional conservative Christian views regarding Jesus and his person. I am a regular Bible teacher in my local congregation and have held pastorates at two Churches.

English is my native language, and I was born and raised in the United States of America. Currently, I teach English as a second language in private and group sessions. My sessions are performed in person and over the internet via Wyzant.

Over the past five years, I have also volunteered with organizations, schools, and churches to teach English as a second language to those who wish to obtain citizenship, continue their education on a high school or college level, prepare for job interviews, or give oral presentations.

As an ESL teacher, I work with beginners, intermediate and advanced students who wish to learn the English language. The course is designed to allow students to talk the majority of the time. Therefore, detailed grammar explanations take place only when necessary and students will always receive homework and progress reports.

My experience is largely Spanish literature. Comprehending and interpreting poems, short stories and essays from Caribbean and Latin American authors has been my area of study for the last seven years.

If you are studying at the A.P. level in high school, have chosen Spanish as a major or minor I can help you to dig into your texts and expand your comprehension. Often this is accomplished simply through discussion of the text, getting to know the author, understanding the historical context and discovering contextual clues that broaden understanding.

As preparation for your A.P. exam this becomes vitally important. Reading comprehension helps with your writing. As we openly discuss the text you improve listening and writing a short reflection gives you the opportunity to practice your writing skills as I help you to correct common writing errors if necessary.

Public Speaking

I worked as a mentor to marketing students at the University of the Sacred Heart in San Juan, Puerto Rico. These students had to give oral and written presentations in English to their customers. My job was to help them to prepare for their presentations by recording them. Each student was able to view the recording to see how they appeared.

I made suggestions on how each student could improve their delivery. We focused mainly on body language, proper enunciation of words, and selecting the correct word to elicit the most appropriate visual image.

For group presentations, I worked on appearance, body language, dress, transitioning between presenters, audience participation, dealing with nervousness, overcoming mistakes, etc. My goal was to ensure that each student could make their presentation flow, while showcasing their individual personality.

Although I do not work on the content of the presentations, I do make word choice suggestions. My suggestions are designed to complement the style of the speaker or speakers, while keeping the audience engaged and responsive.

I completed my Secondary Education Spanish certification while living in San Juan, Puerto Rico, at La Universidad del Sagrado Corazon. This means that I earned my degree while completely immersed in the language all four years. My current students include medical doctors, missionaries and high school students.

Whether you would like to help bring your high school age or college student's grade up or maintain it, we can get there together. I can help explain and practice memorization of difficult vocabulary and distinguish small subtleties that can make the difference between going from a "C" to a "B" or from a "B" to an "A." I specialize in pronunciation, reading comprehension and Spanish literature. I am flexible to work one-on-one in person or online. Please ask my availability.

If learning to speak Spanish for the purpose of vacation, missionary trips or professional advancement is your goal, then you may find my teaching style most beneficial. It is very conversational and we focus on the vocabulary most necessary for your goal. From the very first day we speak in Spanish, clarifying points of grammar and nuances in vocabulary when necessary (some countries use words that are not used in other countries). My goal is that you will learn to think in Spanish, rather than attempt to translate from English to Spanish or vice-versa.

I offer classes in individual or group settings. The class is focused on speaking so that you will be able to converse starting the first day. If you are not into learning complicated grammar rules in order to speak the language, this class is for you! You will learn to speak Spanish and not learn ABOUT Spanish.
