University of Central Missouri (Fitness Wellness)
My internship was done at HEALTHSOUTH (ARC) in the Physical Therapy department and Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, Missouri in the Physical Therapy and Cardiac Rehabilitation departments. In the Cardiac Rehabilitation department (25 – 50+ patients a day) I was responsible for monitoring the patients, designing exercise regimens with the help of the Cardiac Rehabilitation Technicians and taking blood pressure readings. In the Physical Therapy department (30 – 60+ patients a day) I was responsible for getting the therapist ready for their sessions by getting workout equipment prepped and at the correct height and level of intensity, retrieving and placement of bands and weights in proper positions and areas, helping with assessments and offering recommendations. Since 2007 I’ve been the Assistant Coach with the AAU Summer Track and Field Club, New Life Gliders. The club has participants ranging in age from 5 -18 years of age. We have coached a group of 15+ athletes on average and their parents. In 2010 I had the privilege to be the Head Coach of our Track and Field team at Alliant TechSystems (Orbital ATK) and coached 30+ adult athletes including myself.
The thing that makes me an outstanding tutor is, that I care about the overall well being of the family as well as the individual. I offer encouragement for the family to become fit and well as an motivation for the student to be fit as well. I promote wellness as a form or way of life not just a temporary lifestyle change for momentary gratification. You have to keep at it! BUT AT YOUR PACE, not someone else's.
I have been involved in fitness my entire life. Competed from middle school through college and on a national level. Now my focus is to encourage and train young people, our future generations, to become and stay healthy through physical activity. This is my way of giving back to not only my community but to the generations to come after me. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I had the privilege to teach classes to community members in Adapted Physical Education, Nutrition, and Physical Activity & Special Populations. In these courses we worked with two group types, Group One (200+ participants) was elementary and middle school students and their parents, that had no restrictions or accommodations needed. For all participants in group one, we offered education for healthy living and nutrition tips especially for those families that live a busy lifestyle, gave questionnaires, then statistics on the amounts of physical activity and calorie intake needed to be considered living a healthy lifestyle according to the surgeon generals’ report. Group Two (50 -100 participants) were students with restrictions and/or accommodations due to physical or mental disabilities. For all participants in group two, we provided information and education for parents and their children to programs that were available for them and their children to be accommodated for physical activity, as well as education for healthy living and nutrition tips.
