I taught Sylvan Learning Center Math and full ACT preparation courses for two years before I began tutoring on my own in 2007. I work well with students who are struggling or unmotivated as well as those who are excelling and desire to reach just a bit higher (e.g. someone scoring a 32 on the ACT who wants to score a 34).
My style is focused and engaged--even my students with attention disorder are amazed at how quickly our time goes by. Depending on the need of the situation, I encourage, push, use humor, explore anxiety, or find underlying motivation.
ACT Preparation:
I help students raise their ACT score by an average of 5 points by helping them improve their understanding of and approach to all topics tested, teaching them techniques to maximize their pace, and by greatly improving their ability to perform under the pressure of the test. I recommend a minimum of 14 hours (2 hour weekly sessions) for a full course of ACT preparation.
With my approach, students will have a high level of familiarity and comfort when they enter the actual ACT exam. The Math and English portions of the ACT exam are highly predictable, and my students will be comfortable with most any problem presented on test day (depending on initial skill level). Students raise their composite score by an average of 5 points (two this spring raised 9 points!) and have been thrilled with the success of their preparation experience.
Students will solve problems encompassing most of what they will see on test day in a one-on-one guided environment, focusing on repetition of weak concepts. Students also perform 3-6 actual past ACT tests for homework and we cull over their incorrect answers for learning gap patterns with the opportunity to correct before actual test day.
