I am a graduate student in organizational performance and workplace Learning at Boise State University. I have 1 year of experience in tutoring. In the past I have tutored high school and college students in writing and communications. I also worked in the early childhood education field for 10 years.
When I tutor, I focus on helping students understand how what they are being expected to learn is relevant to their life. Once a student understands the relevance, their motivation to do well is increased. Once a student is motivated, I turn the focus to specific problems they are having with the subject and help the student develop short and long-term goals for getting on track.
While it is wonderful to help students with their homework, I try to go beyond that. I love watching a student go from discouraged to motivated and from disorganized to focused. By providing students with the skills and motivation to do well they build self-discipline and are given the opportunity to excel beyond expectations. These are skills which apply not only to academics, but to all areas of life. I am a graduate student in organizational performance and workplace Learning at Boise State University. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I worked in early childhood education for 10 years including pre-K classrooms and after school programs. During that time, I helped many young students with their phonics skills.
I worked as a writing and communications tutor which included helping students to improve presentations for their assignments. I am also an active member of Toastmasters International
I ran a before and after school program and that job involved helping students focus on their homework and get it done in an efficient way.
