About Katy

Hello! My name is Katy, and I'd love to help you if you need some extra work with science subjects! I am a career changer, and worked in a laboratory for over six years. After four years, I decided I missed tutoring. I tutored at William Woods University for my work-study, tutoring in beginning psychology, history, and biology! I went back to school, and will be graduating from the University of Missouri at the end of July with my MED-Science Education for grades 9-12. I spent a whole year teacher-interning at a local high school in Biology for the 2012-2013 school year.

I am currently teaching physical science, chemistry 1, and chemistry 2, but have previously taught biology, ecology, anatomy, physics, and physiology. I love introducing a variety of teaching methods, and do not believe in using only direct instruction/lecture. Sometimes, it takes a neat video, mnemonic device, or silly song to help people remember and understand difficult science concepts. I've found more success with these "out of the box" teaching tools than with simply standing around and lecturing. Because I worked through an alternative education program, I have ten other like-minded science teachers that I keep in contact with, and we often share successful lesson plans.

My biggest fear is that I will be "that teacher" thirty years from now, who is using the same materials as they began their career with. Therefore, I work very hard to ensure I stay current with educational trends and am always on the lookout for a cool, new way to teach difficult material. With all of that being said, I'd love to help you if you need a little extra help with science class!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Basketball

I am qualified to tutor students who are unfamiliar with, or need extra help with basketball. I played basketball from the age of eight until my sophomore year of high school. I am very familiar with all of the rules, and continue to follow college basketball during March madness.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored young children before, especially those who need help with reading comprehension. I have used a variety of resources to help students learn to sound out difficult words, as well as techniques to help students break the words into smaller "pieces" to help them sound out words. I worked with elementary students during my time in high school through the A+ tutoring program, and have also tutored countless other elementary students outside of the classroom during my time in college.

Genetics

I am able to tutor students who are needing extra help with genetics. I understand that genetics can be a difficult subject, but I have several great lesson plans that worked well during my student teaching. I received an "A" in my genetics course in college, and feel confident in my abilities to help those with genetics. I have also worked with students who were struggling with genetics, and have found a few "tricks" to help them understand the material. I will be graduating from the University of Missouri at the end of July with my MED-Science Education for grades 9-12.

Golf

I am qualified to teach golf lessons and have given private lessons in the past. I played golf for four years in high school and also two years in college. I have a strong working knowledge of the numerous rules, and continue to play golf for recreation.

Piano

I am qualified to give piano lessons to beginning students. I have taken over ten years of piano lessons, and I have a working knowledge of music theory. I would be willing to help individuals who would like to begin piano lessons, or those who need help with reading music or music theory.

Volleyball

I am qualified to tutor students who would like to increase their knowledge of volleyball because of my familiarity with the sport. I have a working knowledge of the rules of volleyball, and have played intramural volleyball for years. I would be able to help students who need assistance with serving, and also those who need more knowledge of the rules.

Zoology

I am qualified to help students with general vertebrate zoology because of my education in the subject. I received an "A" in my vertebrate zoology class in college, and had the highest grade of anyone in the course. I am currently working towards offering an ecology/vertebrate zoology course next year to high school students, and would love to tutor this subject.
