About Barbara

Since I was a child I have loved the wonder and adventure of learning new things and sharing those things learned with others (in particular young people). I believe there has to be structure to the learning experience but at the same time a teacher has to flexible to new ideas and challenges for her students. When I taught high school, I would often take my students on field trips to a symphony, a museum, the Chicago stock exchange and other adventures they had not experienced in an effort to broaden and challenge their horizons. There was no greater joy, for me, than to get the "big grin" or "this is great" look on their faces. I taught both English and history. While they are different subjects, they lend themselves quite easily to being planned and taught as an interconnected discipline. It is important for me to get the know a student on an individual basis. I want to know, to an acceptable degree, what makes them "tick". I want to know how they learn and what might hinder the learning process for each of them. I love students and I love to teach them!

I taught middle school for 13 years and high school for over 20 years. During most of the high school experience, I worked with juniors and seniors who were having academic challenges due to, in most cases, factors no related to school or learning. Even though I taught in a public school, each teacher was encouraged to plan according to the needs of each young person. Because of the unique circumstances, I worked with students on an individual basis. There was little classroom lecturing because each student worked from a syllabus at his/her own pace. The setting was like that of a tutoring environment where each young person go the attention he/she needed. Because of the challenges and joys of working with academically challenged students, I believe I am quite qualified to work in a tutoring setting.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
