About Elizabeth

Hello! I am a college graduate with a Master’s Degree in Latin American Studies from Tulane University and Bachelor’s Degrees in Spanish, Latin American Studies, and Anthropology from Missouri State University. (My primary area of research is ancient and modern Maya clothing in Guatemala.)

I am especially excited about tutoring students in Spanish language and culture. I am a St. Louis, MO native, have studied abroad and lived in San Pedro la Laguna, Guatemala for four years and have an advanced reading, writing, and speaking proficiency in the Spanish language. I am also a cultural anthropologist who has experience working with people from different cultural backgrounds and I have a life-long love for learning and sharing my passion for Spanish and Latin American Culture.

I have experience with both High School Advanced Placement and college-level Honors College courses. I am patient and organized, have excellent writing skills, and am able to explain concepts in various ways. I would be happy to help students improve their writing, studying, Spanish, Anthropology, and any other skills they need in a method that is both fun and individualized for each student.

I prefer to keep the tutoring sessions as individualized as possible, including varying the activities and materials used in sessions and assigning homework and suggesting topics to study as needed, so as to ensure the student receives the help they actually need and to not overwhelm the student with unnecessary extra work. I am available either day or evening, depending on the needs of each student, and am able to travel to a location convenient to the student.

I look forward to hearing from you! Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have or to schedule a session.

I apologize that we had a miscommunication about your expectations for tutoring. When chatting, I had begun by asking you whether you needed help with editing or content, and you replied saying you needed help with both. Aside from helping you edit for wording and grammar, I also made many suggestions in the comments section on your paper about the content. There were several places I suggested that you expand your writing based on both content of your paper so far and the rubric that you sent me. As I said in the chat, I thought your paper was interesting, but I thought you needed to speak more about the details of your participant observation experience. I also said that you could talk more about how the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis could be applied to your argument, or include another way language related to Korean culture if you wanted to expand your paper. As you did not ask any questions about content, only if I thought you followed the rubric, I was unaware that you needed more assistance. Again, I apologize for the misunderstanding, and if you would like to discuss anything further, I would be happy to offer you a free 30 minute session to answer any remaining questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Anthropology

I have an undergraduate degree in Anthropology and anthropology courses made up a majority of the courses I took to complete my Master's in Latin American Studies. I have experience taking classes in all four fields of anthropology (biological/physical, cultural, archaeology, and linguistic). I have the most experience working and taking classes in cultural and linguistic anthropology. I have also conducted individual research on Maya language and culture while attending university in the United States and while living in an indigenous village in Guatemala as a cultural anthropologist and have supervised anthropology students on Study Abroad trips to Guatemala.

Spanish

I have studied Spanish for over 10 years. I have a Bachelor's Degrees in Spanish, Anthropology, and Latin American Studies, and a Master's Degree in Latin American Studies. I have over a year of Spanish tutoring experience, and am passionate about Latin American language and culture.

If I wanted to have my essay for cultural anthropology to be reviewed for grammar, I would have gone to an English teacher. I was looking for help with content. I needed help with connecting ideas, Elizabeth did not do any of that. Sure, she commented on my grammar and made things sound better, but there was only one or two corrections where she actually talked about content. I chatted with her af
