About Daniel

Hi, my name is Daniel, and I am knowledgeable in the subjects of English, History, and Computers. In addition to this content knowledge, I possess the ability to pass this knowledge onto students. I graduated from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, and I went on to get my Master's Degree in Political Studies from the University of Illinois at Springfield, where I also earned my teaching certification in English and History. I am experienced in teaching English and History at a Junior High, High School, and Post-Secondary level.

My working and teaching experience helped me to enhance my expert skills in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Windows. This also increased my existing patience and understanding while I worked with others to achieve his or her academic success. As a Literacy Coordinator, I assisted both GED students and individuals wanting to improve his or her reading abilities. I utilized phonics and other teaching methods, such vocabulary building, to accomplish these goals. I am currently working with international students to help them improve their grammar, reading, and essay writing skills at a collegiate level. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I studied multiple hours in multiple English classes while attending undergraduate and graduate college. I have taught Middle School and High School English at Missouri Military Academy and West Pike Junior/Senior High School. My curriculum at West Pike Junior/Senior High School included vocabulary practice geared to assist students who were preparing for the ACT

American History

I took various American History classes while achieving both my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Political Science. I taught American History up to the Civil War for two years while working at Missouri Military Academy. I have received secondary certification in both Illinois and Missouri in the subject of History.

Astronomy

I have had an extreme interest in Astronomy all of my life. While earning my Bachelor of Science at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, I took a class in Astronomy. My lifelong fascination with Astronomy has led me to become a collector of unusual facts about the universe and to keep up with recent findings and theories of planets, moons, asteroids, comets, stars, and galaxies.

Career Development

I worked with participants in the Youth Build program at Hi-Tech Charities, preparing them for careers in construction. While working at Hi-Tech Charities, I taught Entrepreneurship classes, preparing my students for various business careers. I also helped individuals preparing for the GED in order to assist them in career advancement.

English

I studied multiple hours in multiple English classes while attending undergraduate and graduate college. I am currently teaching English Preparedness classes to international students at Lindenwood University - Belleville, preparing my students for future English courses by giving them various lessons in grammar.

European History

While earning my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Political Science, I took multiple classes in European History and Politics. While student teaching at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois, I taught a World History class that involved aspects of European History. I received secondary teaching certification in Illinois and Missouri in various subjects of history.

GED

While working at Hi-Tech Charities, I often sat in for the GED instructor, preparing and giving tests to students and leading lessons on English and History that often appear on the GED. I received certification in Adult Education and Literacy from DESE in the state of Missouri. As Literacy Coordinator, I used phonics and other methods, such as vocabulary instruction, to help adults improve their ability to read.

General Computer

As a student assistant to the Research Librarian at Brookens Library at the University of Illinois at Springfield, I honed my internet search skills while assisting patrons in answering various questions they proposed. At Missouri Military Academy, I taught Computers to 8th graders. As Library and Institutional Development Specialist at Hi-Tech Charities, I continued to develop my knowledge of Windows and other common computer applications, even teaching computer basics when our Computer Instructor was unavailable to do so.

Geography

While attending Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, I minored in Geography. During my student teaching at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois, I taught Cultural Geography. I received my secondary teaching certification in Illinois and Missouri in the subject of Geography.

Government & Politics

I earned both a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in Political Science. I incorporated various lessons on politics and government in the history classes I taught, along with possessing certification at a secondary level in both Illinois and Missouri in the subjects of Civics, Government, and Politics. On a practical side, I have real world experience in the areas of politics and government, because I participated in various political campaigns.

Grammar

My knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure was enhanced through my teaching at Lindenwood University - Belleville, where I instruct English Preparedness classes to international undergraduate students. My background in teaching secondary English at Missouri Military Academy and West Pike Junior/Senior High School has prepared me to design lesson plans and tutoring strategies to address common grammatical mistakes, such as subject/verb agreement problems, run-on sentences, and comma splices. I also practiced teaching grammar while working at Hi-Tech Charities, teaching Business English to adult students with a business focus on their writing.

Literature

While earning my bachelor's and master's degrees, I studied various types of literature, from medieval stories of King Arthur to turn of the century American authors. As an English teacher at West Pike Junior/Senior High School, I taught all four grades, going over Of Mice and Men with my Freshmen class, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court in my Sophomore class, To Kill a Mockingbird for my Junior class, and The Hobbit along with my Senior class, along with the Shakespearean plays Romeo and Juliet, The Tempest, A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Macbeth. I am currently teaching The Lottery, A Rose for Emily, The Ones Who Walk away from Omelas, and Fahrenheit 451 to my English Preparedness students at Lindenwood University - Belleville.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I first started using Microsoft PowerPoint while doing a Teaching Internship at Lincolnland Community College. I have used PowerPoint in all of the classes I have taught, from Missouri Military Academy and West Pike Junior/Senior High School to Hi-Tech Charities and my current position as Adjunct English Preparedness Program Professor at Lindenwood University - Belleville. I am knowledgeable about how to insert text, pictures, and files; manage animations, fades and dissolves; and incorporate music and video into slides.

Microsoft Word

I began using Microsoft Word after first understanding Microsoft Works, a similar program without the versatility that Microsoft Word provides. While working at Hi-Tech Charities, I took and passed the Certiport Microsoft Office Specialist exam. I am knowledgeable of how to insert pictures and word art into Microsoft Word in order to create fliers and how to use the mail merge feature, along with the basic use of Microsoft Word as a word processing program.

Political Science

I have both a Master's degree and a Bachelor's degree in Political Science, from the University of Illinois at Springfield and Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. During my time teaching history at Missouri Military Academy, I incorporated my knowledge of Political Science by focusing on the development of the Constitution, the importance of the Amendments, and the activities of various political parties. I also use my knowledge of Political Science in a more practical way, being an active participant in various political campaigns.

Proofreading

I have taught English, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and writing at a Junior High, High School, and Post-Secondary level. In teaching these classes, I often proofread my students' papers when requested. I can help students who need help with comma splices, run-on sentences, sentence fragments, and subject/verb agreement and tense.

PSAT

While teaching English at West Pike Junior/Senior High School, I prepared student for taking the PSAT. I gave my students reading comprehension exercises to help prepare them for that section of the PSAT. For each class I incorporated weekly vocabulary tests that would help them when taking the PSAT.

Reading

While attending the University of Illinois at Springfield and earning my secondary teaching certification, I took various reading methods classes. I was able to incorporate these methods and strategies into the classes I taught. I have utilized this knowledge while instructing the novels, plays, poems, and short stories in my classes.

SAT Reading

While teaching English at West Pike Junior/Senior High School, I prepared student for taking the SAT Reading. I gave my students reading comprehension exercises to help prepare them for that section of the SAT. I incorporated the strategies the students used during these exercise into the everyday reading they did in class.

Social Studies

I have a Bachelor's degree and a Master's degree in Political Science, a Social Science field, while minoring in Geography, another Social Science field. I earned my Illinois and Missouri secondary teaching certification in the subject of Social Science by taking various History classes, also a Social Science field. I have taught History at Missouri Military Academy, incorporating knowledge and using analysis of social aspect of the subject I learned from my Social Studies Methods class, which I took while studying for my teacher education.

Study Skills

I have worked with students to help improve their study skills by helping them understand time management and how to prepare for tests through the use of games. While working at Missouri Military Academy, I was required to submit the names of any students who failed to turn in their homework, and work with them to help them complete their homework before they were allowed to participate in athletics. In addition, I often supervised mandatory study time in the barracks, working with students to assist in their studying and answering any questions they had.

Vocabulary

I have worked with students at both a junior high, high school, and post-secondary level to help increase their vocabulary through lessons, practice, and tests. At Missouri Military Academy and West Pike Junior/Senior High School, I gave students weekly lists of words and definitions, many of which appear on the ACT and SAT, which I had them practice by writing the words, doing exercise with the words, and composing sentences using the words, before testing them on the words. As an Adjunct English Preparedness Program Professor at Lindenwood University - Belleville, I will often stop a lesson when students encounter a word they do not know, so we can investigate the meaning of the word, along with studying words presented in a particular essay or lesson.

World History

While earning my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Political Science, I took multiple classes in World History, from Classical Times to the Enlightment and more modern historical periods. While student teaching at Lanphier High School in Springfield, Illinois, I taught a World History class that went up to the Medieval period. I received my secondary teaching certification in Illinois and Missouri in various subjects of history, including World History.

Writing

While getting my Bachelor of Science in Political Science from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, I took various writing classes, including ENG 101 and ENG 102. While teaching at Missouri Military Academy, I had my students write daily journal entries which I evaluated each week, while at West Pike Junior/Senior High School, each of my classes were required to write a term paper during their final semester, while I had my Freshmen class practice informative and persuasive writing. I currently teach Reading and Writing for Non-Native Students and Academic Writing for Non-Native Students at Lindenwood University - Belleville, where I instruct students on the four C's: Concise, Credible, Clear, and Correct, along with how to write introductions, thesis statements, and conclusions; provide support for their topics; include citations and works cited using MLA; and brainstorming, editing, and revising their work by themselves and with their peers by having them write four essays, including descriptive/narrative, cause/effect, compare/contrast, and argumentative, along with journal entries for each article, short story, and novel they have read.
