About Jessica

I firmly believe that we as humans never stop learning, therefore we will never stop needing instructors. While I love learning all subjects, I have the deepest affinity for the subject of English as I feel that language allows us to communicate the the triumphs, discoveries, and pitfalls of the human condition, past and present. As a young mother, I graduated Cum Laude, with an Honors certificate, a Phi Theta Kappa membership, the Elizabeth Hoyt Clark Honors Scholarship, a "Who's Who of American College and University Students" award, and an AA of English through Jefferson College. I subsequently obtained a Sisters of Loretto Scholarship, and a BA of English with emphasis in Literature, Society, and Politics (and a minor in Professional Writing) through Webster University. I officially began tutoring in 2008 as a peer tutor at Jefferson College where I tutored students in composition and literature courses, as well as English as a Second Language. Upon my graduation, I continued to tutor peers in my community, and still do to this day. I completed my BA with my two biological children and two step children in tow thus learned how to enhance the learning experiences of others while expanding my own abilities and knowledge.

I love utilizing my passion for English to help others succeed. I feel a deep sense of pride and joy when I help an emerging reader break through and conquer beginning phonics-- and their first year of school. I love watching the growth and experience in my students as they better learn how to read and write. I admire the evolution of my older students' writing styles or points of focus. I do not think there is one thing that I dislike about tutoring: it is the only job that I've ever actually loved.

Throughout my collegiate career, I filled my course load with numerous English classes covering composition, literature, and linguistics. I focus on English, Grammar, phonics, reading, writing, proofreading, vocabulary, literature, ESL, ACT English, SAT writing, SAT reading, and public speaking. I enjoy encouraging students to find their own potential, to come to their own educated answers, and to better understand intricate rules or complex ideas. I strive to adapt to each student's needs individually so I may help lead them to their full potential without overwhelming them.

In addition to teaching my own children letter recognition, phonics, grammar, etc., I have also assisted many other emerging readers with building a strong foundation in reading. I emphasize understanding the sound(s) of each individual letter or the changes invoked by pairing specific letters, and encourage each word to be read or sounded out by the student. I love incorporating various rhymes or mnemonics to ensure retention, and also recognize the relatively short attention spans of younger readers and strive to work with any student's learning preferences.

I hold myself accountable for my students; therefore, I welcome and encourage feedback and discussion. I want to ensure that each student and/ or parent is satisfied with both my instruction and the student's progress. I maintain a 12 hour cancellation policy, but am flexible on rescheduling. I am open to on site tutoring at libraries as well as online tutoring via Skype and email.

I look forward to helping you or your child reach or exceed educational goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have a Bachelor's Degree in English. I am so enamored with this subject that even the majority of my electives were various English courses. I am very confident in my cumulative knowledge regarding English, ranging from emerging readers to collegiate endeavors.

Grammar

4 years of college courses, 10 years of educating my children, and 7 years of tutoring equip me with a strong grasp on grammatical concepts. Furthermore, I studied linguistics for one year, and not only did I gain an affinity for linguistics, but also deeper understanding of language and grammar at its core.

Literature

The emphasis of my Bachelor's is Literature, Society, and Politics. I have both taken and tutored a range of literary courses spanning the globe. I strive for comprehension, as well as the ability to communicate or write about literature.

Reading

I have a great deal of experience within the realm of reading including being a lifelong, avid reader. My affinity turned into studying literature for 4 years, and a BA of English. Finally, I've not only worked to teach my own children to read, but have also provided tutoring to a number of other children in my community to boost their abilities.

Vocabulary

Along with my degree, courses taken, courses tutored, and the never-ending tutelage of my children, I am always expanding my lexicon. In doing so, one must know both word and definition. Linguistics played a huge part in helping me understand the basic components of words and their meanings.

Writing

Aside from majoring in English, I minored in Professional Writing. Courses in composition, Linguistics, literature, and honestly every class that I have taken have all given me ample opportunity to compose essays. I learned how to fine tune the writing process. The majority of my tutoring experience is in writing assistance for not only English courses, but any course.
