I have recently retired from being a public school teacher in Missouri for 28 years. I have taught students of all ages through all of those years. I was most comfortable with the students that were Middle School Age students. I seem able to relate to them and identify with them easily. I even had a class of at-risk students in Middle School that I truly enjoyed. I graduated with an extra certification in the teaching of reading. I especially feel comfortable with the teaching of reading, literature, grammar and other English subjects. I taught only a self-contained fifth grade classroom for 9 of the years. I taught special reading for two years. I taught study skills for 4 years and truly enjoyed that and its challenges. I taught Middle School geography for 8 years along with Middle School Reading. I just recently moved to St. Joseph from more northern Missouri. I have wanted to move back here since I was in College here. I've always felt at home in St. Joseph. I have two daughters. One graduated from MWSU four years ago and the youngest will graduate from MWSU this December.
I do expect my tutored students to be mannerly and respectful. I would rather not get into any big discipline problems with my tutoring students as I have had plenty of those problems in the last 28 years. I would like to tutor students that truly want to do better in the chosen subject and will do their part to make this experience successful. I prefer to teach in a situation where both the student and I are comfortable with the surroundings. I find that this is much more conducive to learning.
I do want my students to have goals and work to meet them. We are not in this situation to waste time. My time with the student will be a time for learning and understanding. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
